Hi all, you are all aware of this expression 'Bar of silver',could anyone explaine over what period of time a salmon starts to take on colour, Do coloured fish enter the river, or are they all silver comming into the river. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi Fishingpip, I am certainly no expert but I have seen coloured Salmon with sea lice on them showing they can colour up at sea. Most fish though enter freshwater silver and then start to change colour as the freshwater speeds up the 'Tartaning' process ready for a bit of love in their life! This info is not concrete and other fishermen will probably have different theories.

Macsalmo is right, you do get coloured salmon with sea lice. This often happens when the salmon has been in the estuary/river mouth for extended periods of time.
