Saw a kingfisher whizz past me last weekend when I was walking the dog.
Haven't noticed any swifts or swallows yet, but perhaps it is too early?

What I have seen which I have never experienced before is the number of bats flying round early/mid afternoon. A friend as also reported seeing a few at different locations.I don't know much about bats, but I have never seen them flying round in bright sunny conditions early in the afternoon. DAZ.

I've not seen any swallows or martins yet down here so they do seem to be late but maybe they are bit confused as there are reliable reports of some in February! www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=%2Fnews%2F2004%2F02%2F09%2Fnbird09.xmlI also have seen some bats flying in the middle of the day back in March. I wonder if the mild weather has woken them up but there aren't enough insects about at night yet so they have to come out by day to feed. Andy

Sad to say, fewer curlew, pee-wits and oyster catchers than normal this year. Also a shortage of snipe, but a surplus of cormorants and black backs.

Plenty of curlew pee-wits and oyster catchers in the Spey Valley, interestingly I thought the sand pipers were a week earlier this year.

Hi Kercock,
I fished wednesday and still haven't seen the sandmartins as yet. However, did see the kingfisher going in an out of the banking.

I always saw sand martins first week in April (Dundee holiday); their late but hey, so are the fish.
