I fished the town water on the Helmsdale last week. No joy apart from one kelt, which was no surprise as they have had only 4 from the town water so far this season. I agree with comments above. Some of the north rivers, although not all could be accused of complacency with the kill rate on the springers. They have been cushioned by the lack of habitat issues and the pretty excellent river quality to keep producing the smolts but steps should be taken now to protect existing stock, particularly the spring fish

I really do think that this thread is remarkably well named - 'Doom and Gloom in the far North' very apt indeed, considering the amount of 'Trophy' fish pictured on the link added by macd.
I must admit that I find it incredible that considering the current plight of our Spring salmon, especially in a year so far where there is an obvious shortage, that certain individuals feel the need to kill such a number of fish. I wonder if they are happy or even know that their photo's are displayed on a public website. I think I'll look elsewhere if the day ever arrives when I can afford to buy a pair of Sims waders G4 waders !!
I personally much prefer the photo of our current world record holder Gordon Armstrong and I'm sure that if he was pictured with a fish, it would be on it's way back into the river.

Hear! Hear! -
I'm hoping the Borgie might be producing some fish as I am going there next week. Any confidence boosting news anyone? If not, best not to say anything....

Sorry Macd,
I didn't intentionally intend to steal the thread, but simply felt that I needed to express an opinion on the link. I know there have been recent instances of thread hijack but this is definetely not the case. When confronted with something that you feel strongly about it's hard to remain quiet. I clearly recognise that it's of great assistance, especially to visitors to have up-to-date reports but I personally feel that there is plenty evidence of fish without the need of such 'graphic' supporting photos. In any case I still think the thread is accidentally very well named but as I have no information on the northern rivers, I will leave this thread to the boys who do have.
Hope you have a good trip Smigel, Tight Lines.

Its a always a fraught issue and I understand that there are strong feelings about. I just didnt want to participate on this occassion- particularly by accident. ;D

The Borgie is not fishing too well either.
One or 2 more fish appearing on the thurso- but the water is at a summer low- a bit of a bummer so early in the season.

Thanks for the updates, doesn't look to encouraging. slow on the thurso too andy- a lot of the springers took advantage of the high water earlier on and ran right through into loch more. The Halladale doesn't have a loch it can lose all it's fish in so they have come up with the excuse that last years huge floods have altered all the pools and nobody has found the new lies yet Talking of L. More I think I read somewhere that it can fish well for salmon from the shore when it has dropped to near it's original size, is this right, is it worth a chuck? Andy
