The Tweed catches seem to be picking up is this a sign that the missing springers are coming?

Madkeen your question epitomises to me the very essence of fishing ........ persistent, undaunted, unyielding, determined, steadfast, HOPE.

???Bob the gillie on W.Learmouth is getting seriously down over this year's Spring run. Yes, 3 is still their lot, often fished hard all week by good anglers. £85 is a little off the mark, it's £100+ now. I fished the bottom river for 4 half days this week, never saw a fish! What fish that are coming in are oddly motoring straight through to the caulds near Kelso, where a few are getting caught. A few years back the River below Coldstream would have had fish everywhere in these conditions in mid-April. Possibly it is the almost complete absence of kelts on the lower/bottom river that is not encouraging the new fish to settle there, the pools seem all but devoid of life. I'll be most interested as to any theories.

Aye your right stoater, I forgot to add the VAT A good ghillie as you say, but the beat like many Tweed beats is totally overpriced for the number of fish they catch in Spring. When will we waken up? 3 fish for a beat fished hard all season as you mention means that its ridiculously overpriced in anybody's language. I don't want to resurrect the value in salmon fishing thread though. There was a good run of magnificent spring fish in mid-March but since then its been very quiet cheers Splash

I also fished for ten hours solid on lower tweed on wed... and saw only one fish in that time...hardly call it the mighty tweed more like terrible tweed.

This should be the prime week of the Tweed spring run - its along way from it. It only looks good in comparison to the dreadful weeks so far this year.
Dee is holding up the best of all the big rivers i think - but it still is down by a fair bit for April.
The water levels are hazing the April returns on alot of rivers - especially smaller (spate dependent) rivers.

Madkeen
things on the whole Tweed system are desperate for the time of year and I dare bet that overall angling effort is up again.
I was above Kelso cauld as a very very grateful guest last week on what should have been a bees knees fill yer boots week and never saw a fish out of the water and the only bit of excitement was a flash at a Collie Dog in a bid to stir 'em up at teatime albeit I had the most enjoyable days fishing in great company and surroundings.
Had a go at West Learmouth earlier this year as well in early March for a Saturday's amusement as Bob's tales of adventure amongst the Vikings and the chilli pies from Cornhill shop always make it worth a trip but it just wasn't holding fish nor kelts for that matter.
And yes,£75 a shot was a bit stiff but when you've brooked the odds more than a few times with a range of different techniques you think that it'll be your turn today.Every second Saturday in perpetuity has just been sold on WL by Savills for a decent sum per fish so I wouldn't be expecting a results orientated price drop given what it has traded on at.
Still think the sight of big early springers is a bad sign and agree with the boatmen it usually signifies a drought.Quite a few diseased fish about as well now on Dee and Tweed.
