Hi Guys and Gals, am new to this site, been lurking awhile. Anyway would like to start a new idea...MISTAKES
You know, tying flies and enjoying a wee dram of medicinal Heelan’ tea (otherwise known as uisge beatha [water of life]) do not mix too well. Mistakes tend to creep in.
Last night, I was tying a few examples of the Black Shrimp, as found on my club’s website. As I was tying the third one I suddenly realised that the first two didn’t look quite right. How so? Another wee dram showed me that I’d missed the tail off…duhhhh! No way was I going to strip the hooks down to start again. So they went into my fly-box.
This afternoon, feeling a tad better after the beneficial effects of the uisge beatha yesterday, I stepped into the Ness to throw a line whilst waiting my turn to do my grandfatherly duty in baby-sitting for an hour or two, besides acting as taxi-driver for daughters. Tide was ebbing and for some reason, only known to the great Ness-caster above, I tied on one of my mistakes. Second cast, a hit…..and a few minutes later an estimated 2lb sea trout kelt was in the net and released.
So much for mistakes! Wondering what sort of “mistakes” the different distilleries will produce! Personally I prefer the Islay types. Not too keen on the Speysides, too light for my taste.
Any other lucky fly-tying mistakes out there gents (and ladies)?
