Quite a few smallish fish at Portnacraig today (4-5 lbs) but all shapes , sizes and colours of fish along with them. Gave it the usual 9 1/2 hour thrashing for nothing - the day after giving Kercock an 8 hour thrashing for the same result. Faskally is the place to be, I reckon. Sad times....

Some years ago,we were catching fish of three to five pounds. I sent some scale samples to Fascally. It turned out that the fish were two sea winter ones. Previously uor earliest grilse have been on the 18th of May,that was the last year of the netting, the netsmen's first grilse was caught on the 15th May. Donnie, you must have been back whilst I was on holiday, last time we met you had one in the Garden Pool,,mention the good days too ! Are the Belgians still knocking the lumps below the dam on the worm ?

I went to Portnacraig yesterday after catching and releasing a 9lb fish on the Sawmill beat and the first thing I saw was a frenchman walking up the opposite bank with a dead salmon in his hand. They're not using the worm - yet - and the same frenchman lost one on Wednesday on the fly. I've never had a bad day on Kercock!!

Anyone can do so,as far as I know.you may need to supply the weight ,sex and where the fish was caught,in the case of a grilse size fish take the scales from around the dorsal fin where the scales are bigger.place the scales in a small envelope then into a larger envelope for posting.I don't have the full address but the Freshwater Fisheries Laboatory ,Fascally by Pitlochry will get the envelope there I'm sure. They will,in time send you a report on the fish,ie lifespan and how long it was in freshwater up to smolt stage and after. No doubt someone will send you more accurate advice, but this will do the job.........Cheers.

As the early fish are nearly all hen fish, I have heard that what we take for early grilse some years is in fact the spring cock fish.
