Have these nasty beasties arrived yet? When I was up in the Borders about a month ago there were the odd one or two about, but nothing worry many.

Well I went to feed our piggies tonight (we fatten a couple each year for our freezer except this year we have six somehow) and have come back with a few midge bites - not the nasty ones of July, but a bit itchy none the less. This is on a moor south of the Clyde Valley. They are on the way but possibly not much earlier than they can be. Worst surprise I had was being bitten in early April a few years ago as I lay waiting for a buck at 7.30 in the morning. That was upsetting to say the least but not as ghastly as lying waiting for a stag in September in Islay when in a flat calm I noticed that the barrel of my gun and then the back of my hand were just rippling with wee silver midges - truly terrifying.

They've been frozen into submission here now..... bloody baltic! I have friends fishing in the Kola peninsula this week and I'll bet it's warmer for them.

Great idea Mac, helps you to stop smelling like a "prossies parlour" from lashings of "skin so soft" and to cut down on the 20 fags a day - just to keep the wee mites at bay ;D

Old Peculiar and Curry, the little gits never come close to the fog drifting up out of the breathables. Its like running full tilt into a brick wall for them, either that or they dont like rotting meat.Honestly they never bother me,even in midge heaven I can remain unscathed.Pedro.

So that's the secret Rennie. Just been to Skye and had the misfortune of a puncture. It took four of us, working in shifts, the best part of an hour to change it. My remaining Montecristo No.4's are now gone and the other 3 guys don't even smoke! Doesn't bode well for the remainder of the summer. Kenziemac
