Can anyone tell me if there are any good downloadable Spey Casting tuition Videos on-line, to buy or freebies ? Thanks Ray Most of the ones on line are of variable quality. Eoin Fairgieve had some reasonable ones on his site and there are a few sequences on You Tube and Spey Claves. None can really compete with a decent DVD on quality terms though. The Rio, Simon Gawesworth/Jim Vincent DVD is ok but the main problem of DVD's as a teach yourself aid is that while you may think that you are doing what the man in the video is instructing you to do, often you are not ! This can lead to you exacerbating pre- existing faults in your technique. IMHO its much better to spend the money on some lessons with a good instructor who will see any flaws and set you up to deal with them and improve your technique no end to boot cheers Splash

Made me have another look on You tube and apart from "Spey Girl" doing a rather elegant snake roll, I found some rare footage of someone actually doing the infamous Don Juan Helicopter cast www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXEFKl3PpsM

I think splash is right in saying an instructor would be a better way to go, but if a DVD is what you want then Rio's Modern Spey Casting at £24.95 is IMO the best instructional media by far. I'll give the People's Republic of North Britain's vote to that shout.

Hi Guys, Yes, I know exactly what you are saying and in fact I had several lessons from Eoin, before I left for France The problem is that I didn't have time to really reinforce, make headway, with my lessons from Eoin before I left, and there are no XXXdy instructors here Nor do I have DVD Ray

Thanks for the video link salmonshrimp, great. Splash wrote : France does have some compensations though: food/women/12 hour working week/100K PA state pension/ Bordeaux, Burgundy,Champangne, Rhone/Provence/Cote d'azur etc The food is not what it's cracked up to be, I'm married and even if I weren't the women are not what they are cracked up to be either, they are all skinny and flat chested, you have to work here a fair while and become a citizen to get that sort of pension, the wine is nowhere near what it is cracked up to be either, Australian is much better and you can't buy anything other than French wine here, I don't drink champagne, and yeah those place are great for holidays but living here is quite different - and I miss my fishing. I came here to the SW because this is where the Salmon fishing is, allegedly, but it's fished out and I've never seen a single fish move or jump. They are there because I've seen pictures of catches but they are few and far between

Aye, Flynnboy sounds suicidal over there in France, just like that Frank Zappa song all these years ago said It would be good to do a thread on the (supposed) salmon fishing over there though Interesting wee video clip from Scott Mackenzie, certainly the best of its type that I've seen and freely available. Nice to see him emphasise the subtleties of technique to get increased line speed on, for example, the double Spey. Thanks salmonshrimp for sharing the link cheers Splash

Salmonshrimp It was fine - took me a minute to open it had to hit the pause button to get it started but for an amateur clip it was much better than most you see on you tube etc and the commentary from Scott was very clear

I feel the same as splash. For someone who is still trying to grasp the Spey, at a distance, I think it's really good. After I've studied it a little more I'll go and find a secluded place to try it out. I've also decided that it's better for my mental health not to go out 'Fishing' but to go out and practice my casting Strange thing about that pause button though, not that it matters a bit.

Ok thanks
The reason, I think, for the pause button is the video loads when the page loads and then its paused at the first frame to allow you to start when you wish, rather than starting on the page load event and annoying everone. Wow what a mouthful :-)
I forgot to mention last time that Scott has very kindly given permission to upload the video.
May yer line whistle

Hi Salmonshrimp,
Thanks for the link - the video is pretty good and the sound excellent.
Full of good advice for novice and more experienced casters alike.
Agree entirely with the comments about the snake roll vs double spey. The only time I find the ds edges it is when I have limited space to form a d-loop behind me - anyone got any suggestions as to how a snakey roll can be adapted for these conditions?
Will watch it again before venturing out at the end of the week.

Hey...we getting off-topic here and becoming anti-French....accepted most of them are Napoleonic in nature, especially in Paris...geeze.., but my experiences are that the food is excellent (when we Italians taught the French how to cook...when the Medicis married into French court), the wine is excellent although you can get Italian wine in most French shops/supermarkets, albeit hidden away somewhere in the far corner (Aussie wine?...yuk, and the Romans taught the French to make wine) and my experience of French ladies (one in particular!)...well-formed and .....(too much info now ).... ;D...but each to his own. Fishing?...another subject in France.....never saw a salmon either...bummer...

Anti French ? Not a bit tombee ! I live here if the SW and I think the French people are lovely and in my experience wonderfully generous in nature, and I love their way of life. However there is a general feeling (according to Brit food and wine critics) that the French are standing on their laurels a little with their wine and food, and I'm afraid that I do like Aussie wine, rich, full bodied and oaky and I haven't found a French one to rival wines like Rawsons Retreat yet. As for the women... well of course that is entirely subjective but they really are in general amazingly thin - down here anyway. As for the fishing, there's nothing more to be said about that we're thinking of moving to Ireland for that reason.
