Any one got any ideas as to why in the last five years or so we are seeing less Salmon and Sea-trout Jumping in our rivers- even at times when we know they are there in numbers? Frank

I think its the temp,i have seen them jumping caulds but on the water i fish they seem to be running very hard indeed, not showing much ,though this year has been a bit different, especially on colder days,i have seen quite a few porpoising, and splashing of tails on the surface, which makes it all very exciting indeed, not seen that many jumping clear, apart from the caulds, but then again they have no choice, when faced with these obstacles.

Is that always the case?
I think as the season draws further on fish start to show more and more. The Tyne in the autumn can also be bouncing with showing fish. Sometimes not at all interested though.
The Dee in May at Aboyne was literally jumping with fish after 10pm - but they were seamingly uncatchable.

And there's hardly any fish in comparison?

I always thought that it was the amount of peat in the water that caused them to keep quiet. Very occasionally, the Deveron here does run clear and the blighters still don't show!
