Hi all I have had a few harling trips on the Tay but as a spey casting addict I confess that it does my head in despite the good company of the gillie and others. In the interests of conservation is it time to remove this form of fishing from our repertoire where a boat sits over known lies with 3 or 4 lures downstream of the boat. Mike

I don't really see the harm it's doing although some of the well known beats catches would drop if harling was stopped.A lot of eldery and disabled anglers like being in the boat so it does have it's uses.

Not sure if you should stop it altogether, it would deprive some of the middle/ lower beats on the tay of a lot of fish, especially in the early Spring and late autumn.
I know where you're coming from though, boring as hell and really detached from the whole experience. I try and avoid it like the plague.

In my experience of the Tay there is only one rare time when Harling is a fish slaying device; that is in September/October when the fish haven't been typically harled over for a few months and suddenly... for a few hours or so
However, if they all go back, so what (it is only of limited effect) against any other allowable methods that will slay in their own time and place?
