So I'm off to the Emerald Isle early next month and I'm taking couple of rods with me..... the grand plan for a weeks fishing with a local 'rod' has been crumbled due to unforseen complications (my 'guide' split up with my wifes pal who we're staying with and it would be more than my wedding tackle is worth to contact him........ ). So she who must be obeyed says I'm down to two days, one for trout and one for salmon. Trout I think I've got covered but if I have one days salmon fishing where should I go Jock gave me some suggestions a while back but I have one day now and am in something of a quandry I've always fancied the Moy but am open to suggestions - budget for a day up to 150 Euros-ish. I'll be based in Castlebar. All helpful suggestions appreciated

Hamish - you should have plenty of fishing to choose from although as always it will be conditions that dictate where will be fishing best. You have a good budget which will also give you a good choice. I would contact minitube as there is no better person to advise you. However some food for thought would include: - if water is high when you are there then fish up river, East Mayo has some great fly water and not too expensive (Euro 30 a day), also Clongee the beat below has some nice fly water near the top - if the water is low then I would consider some of the Ballina beats, you obviously have the Ridge Pool which you could cover in your budget (it is on a half day basis) - my personal preference though is for the beat below it, the Cathedral beat, you fish it from sunrise to 6.00 so get a longer day (also less effected by the tide, you need to be careful of this on the half day Ridge Pool ticket) - there is also the Ash Tree beat further down (fish mainly from a boat with ghillie) and Spring Wells which can also be productive - in September there is sometimes still late avaliability for all the Moy beats so it would be worth giving the fisheries a call to check the week you are there (www.northwestfisheries.ie) hope this helps, PM if you have any other questions E

As alternatives to the Moy, if you happen to get a bit of rain you might like to consider the Erriff in south Mayo, or if you fancy lough fishing, there's Burrishoole, just beyond Newport.
