After scouring a wide selection mail order lists and magazine adverts it would appear as if plain and simple fly reels with ratchet and adjustable for r or l/h operation are no longer manufactured. Do any forum members know different?

The balance of consensus regarding modern fly reels is that a disc drag is better, BFR (and I'm sure Orvis-are they made by BFR?) produce reels where there is an option to have a clicking sounding device though I think they are all disc drag of one kind or another. Let the tackle shops do the work for you, they have contacts and often know someone who has what you are looking for, telephone one and ask them if they have one or can get one.
Billytheghillie is correct about ebay, excellent source of old and new tackle, much of it very cheap.

Hello salmonking you well know my desire for the simple life, I always thought a fly reel was a convenient means of holding line and backing when casting ,or playing a fish. A simple ratchet to prevent overruns what more could a fisher want. Now I must fiddle with drag settings which never seem right, and I can assure you there are more than a few others who share my views.
