There are fish in the Wye!!!
Fishing with the esteemed ACW and Lord Geoff's private army at Holmes Lacey I caught my first of the season on an Ally Shrimp. Lovely 8-9lb hen fish that is swimming upstream as we speak to do her business.
The water is dropping in nicely but could do with clearing a bit. Helpful ghillie, Colin, knows his onions and gives his knowledge freely.
We saw quite a few more fish moving. looks good for the coming week if the rain holds off.

Greg, shush there might be a stampede. London spetcasters latest outing produced one or two large grins , When we told the ghillie about Gregs sucsess he seemed not to beleive us until the rather hazy mobile photos were displayed

Well done...lets hope she makes it to a beautifully fenced off, coppiced, sheep dip free, pH7 tributary with a suitable groom!!
Looks like substantial rain on its way again tomorrow, so give the upper Wye ago next weekend.

ACW, don't worry it was the last one there!!
Size 12, I think Ally shrimp 7ft slow sink Rio leader 4ft 15lb Seaguar, just fished a 30 or so yard cast down and across, well maybe with a couple of down stream mends and sometimes some upstream mends depending on how it felt.
No luck at all with the stripped collie dog, that would have been exciting!!

Thanks Sage fly. Just interested as I noticed your point about visibility and was interested in your tactics as we have the same issue on the middle Severn at the moment.

Tom,
The fly was fishing just sub surface even with the slow sink leader. Visibility was about 3ft into the water. I would like to give it a go when the water was clear. I reckon you could spot fish in the island pool and almost sight cast to the.
How is the Severn doing? Worth a throw this weekend?

Hi Sagefly,
I expect the Severn will be up and brown by saturday, but could be proved wrong. If wrong then there could be a nice run of Grilse with the odd bigger fish on the back of the tides . Stumpy (the Diglis Wizard) is your man for early reports from lower down. Personally I'm planning a whistlestop tour of the upper Towy/ or middle Teifi (depending on water) plus some upper Severn salmon fly fishing and sewin again on the Wnion.
Lost a fish around 12lb yesterday teatime on a 3/8ths inch silver stoat tube. The size 16 just pinged out at the crucial moment. The fly fishing has been very poor indeed on the middle severn this year due to the water levels. I have only been out a couple of times since early June and much of May was a wash out too. So apart from the high odds against searching for earlyish springers on the fly, there hasn't really been any fly fishing around here this year. Every time the river looked like it was just getting right, down came more rain. However the plus side is that those who enjoy a bit of worming upriver in Wales have seen the best season for twenty years!

Cheers Tom,
The London Speycasters could well invade the Wye again depending on the water.
