Is anyone catching salmon just now. had 3 this year and lost a cracking 14-15lb fish when my Conrad lure halved in two, waiting on reply from them re quality issues, never had this happen before. plenty of salmon showing at harbour and up river, up river they are turning to redds not worth fishing for, just need that spate to get back out on the river.

Don't know why this is in the classifieds section ;D
We could do with water on quite a few rivers now to be honest - won't suit all but will suit the majority

Yeah, sure a lot of the big rivers are doing ok like the Tweed and Tay, but the likes of the following need water desperately (which are my local rivers)
Tyne Wear Coquet Border Esk Annan Eden Tees

Could not agree more tyneandrew, although unconfirmed reports say that thye odd small grilse is forging through low water conditions on some of the smaller rivers.

There is a good reason why Tyne anglers may not have been getting many fish, nets off your harbour mouth getting up to 100 (ish) fish per day! You can console yourself that some of those will have been for the Tweed. Still, your netting season is finished now so you might get some fish.

What a productive little river, not the typical Norwegian river we tend to think of.

Can't remember exact Tyne dates, sorry but can't be bothered to look them up. I talked to a guy in area for second time in the last few weeks, he told me about the net catches. You should have bought all nets men at the same time, now you may well have to pay twice! Est season.... March to 31st August.

Licenses reduced from 69 to 16 from 2002. The idea was never to buy them all out - it is a phasing out process which actually began in 1993. The catch has been significantly reduced since then. Sounds like the ususal Tyne chinese whispers, or most peoples scape goat 'there's no fish because my mates with the nets have been telling me............lardy lardy blah blah'

No, he knows nets men/boat men around that coast. Not the sort to make things up. I understood that most of the old/poorer salmon fisherman were bought off, but a number of the most skillful operators chose to remain because it was more profitable. There must be someone out there with more knowledge on netting than me, suggest you search EA web site for T/J/drift nets etc. Also search Tweed Commissioners site etc, I don't think the Tyne etc have anything like a fisheries board.

Maybe the famous 80:20 argument then?
80% of boats off - but the remaining 20% are the one's that catch 80% of the catch.
Who knows

I would say your 80 /20 goes for the fish .
For every 80 in the river 20 are your potential catch. The bigger the run the more caught. Nets have been off on the Deveron for more than 20 years and the catch has not gone up any.
We are consistant on a ten year average of 3000 salmon. And yes we are catching- too many at the moment and the availability is next to nothing from now until 31 October.

two of the best fishermen on the river have been sighted on the Tyne at Blaydon Two Seals, No doubt they have followed the Salmon up and are having a field day

Tyne Angler, ten years ago myself and a number of friends joind the Bywell syndicate, at this time prices were moderate, we had the choice of which day we would like as there was plenty of vacancies, you could fish the Fed water on the Tyne sometimes you never saw another angler, next year we lose the Bywell fishing and you cant get near the fed water without queing up ? think this answers your question about rod pressure

My origional query was RE the Deveron and its 3000 fish 10yr average.
