Wondering where we get most of our takes - is it in the neck , middle or tails of pools.
I'm a great fan of fishing the tails hard - (assuming average flow levels) as whilst they may not hold the "residents", the fish, slipping in just above some white water will often be fresh - sitting for a moment or two before pressing on.
I find these fish more likely to take the fly than in middle or necks of pools.
Any one else of similar thoughts ?

Agreed - I like the "V" at the bottom of a pool although I tend not to spend a lot of time on it. If a fish is there you should get him straight away....

I like the tails of pools, particularly for grilse. I also like the heads of pools, more so if the water is very disturbed due to a narrow band of current, or large boulders. At this time of year, however, i probably have more success with the residents on long flats.

in the tails of pools i kinda always expect a pull from a fish,i like my fly to travel quite quickly i cast a little bit squarer and this normally produces savage takes. where i fish the mid and top end of the pools are pretty feature less so i tend to pass through them pretty quickly unless theres plenty of fresh water on.

Where do you fish Alan ?
I too cast a touch squarer in the tails of pools, as it does produce a savage take at times. When you get one - you know he's on !!

The past couple of seasons, mostly the Awe, Ewe, Ness, Dee, Earn and Tay. Also do a bit on the Endrick - well up, past the pots of Gartness, but haven't been out on it this year - lack of water, would you believe. Have fished a lot on the Spey and Tweed in previous seasons, and years ago did have a go on the Forth - Blue Banks, I think. I suppose a bit of a nomad fisher - but hey ... follow the fish - they wont follow you. Cheers Altmor.

Never done Fairnilee - 90% of my Tweed days have been at Upper Hendersyde, with the odd day at Nest, Ashistiel, Traquair and the public water on Cardrona. I hear the latter may not be so public from now on though.
And yes your right the Blue Banks is on the Tieth - was a guest there many moons ago - still caught he-haw. ;D

www.thebigfish.proboards91.comAlan - try asking re Fairnilee above - there's a good few who fish the Tweed there - perhaps Zephead, if he's not negotiating a late night taxi service with the local ninjas. ;D Cheers, Altmor.
