Hi there
I think this may be my first post on this forum - can't remember! Anyway - I hope that despite what seems to have been a bruising period I may still be able to get a little help and advice!
To celebrate getting a new job I am taking a week off in between roles and treating myself to a couple of days on the Hodder at Whitewell in mid-October (the Inn at Whitewell's water).
I've never fished the Hodder, nor even any salmon rivers in that area. I'm normally a Wales and West Country man. Has anyone fished these waters before? Does anyone have any advice for a Hodder virgin?
I may also try Stocks reservoir for an afternoon and I am even more of a virgin when it comes to stillwaters!
All advice gratefully received.
Cheers
James

Given water the Hodder will fish well in October as most of the Salmon seen to run very late. The water at Whitewell is nice and there are some good holding pools so even if the water is low you will still have a chance with some of the resident fish. The river can drop off very quickly after a flood due to the amount of water abstraction on the head waters. A 13' to 15' rod will be fine if there is some water if not use your reservoir gear, a sink tip or slow sinker should cover most situations. As for the business end a 12 to 15lb leader and something with red or orange in it.
Stocks is a beautiful place but the fishing can be hard at times but the scenery and great staff at Stocks make up for the tough times.
Hope you have a great trip. The beer and food at the Inn are great and the local scenery is stunning if the valley is not bogged down in cloud.
