The season has finally picked up on the River Finn - a number of fish were caught at the Killygordon beat on Wednesday and by Friday they had reached the upper stretch at Glemore and the 'beats' above. There were at least 17 fish caught on the Friday and a lot of these were on the fly - one guy had three on the fly, 2 released.
On Saturday at least a further 6 fish were caught (5 on fly and 1 worm).
Was there myself on Saturday - water was perfect for the fly but the fish did not oblige!

it can be busy at times especially when the grilse are in during June - it wasn't too bad on Saturday - think I only had to wait once all day. During the week its not normally as busy so if you can get the time off and the water is good it can be ok

I used to fish on a season ticket for over 20 years but went mid week last april and it was horrendus. Five or six rods waiting at every pool plus the wormers anchored in one spot. Five wormers stretched out down mc gintys- rooted to the spot. Far cry from even 10years ago when you might have seen 3 or 4 locals and a couple of visitors mid week in spring time. Saying that it's the best fly river in the country but i just can't be bothered with the hassle anymore. I might give it one more go this year and hope the increase in ticket price and one fish limit until June keeps a lot of rods away.

yes it is lovely fly water and it is getting a fair run of fish at the moment (certainly enough to give it a go). I think you may have just been unlucky last April as I have generally found it not too busy during the week in spring. For instance on Friday when all the fish were caught there was hardly anybody fishing it. Saying that though word will have got about and it could be realively busy this week I still think at £20 its good value and as you say it may help to detour some of the numbers.

had another trip to the Finn and yes another blank There was a smallish flood about 3-3.5ft, a nice height but a bit too colored for the fly. There were quite a few other guys fishing but surprising I heard of no catches all day. More heavy rain today so tomorrow could be the day. Won't be long now till the grilse start making an appearance

Grilse have started to show, last week there were 50 fish caught at Glenmore and at least half of these were grilse. I fished on Saturday and yet again blanked!! With more rain forecast the river should see more grilse arriving

Easky, I note from the date on your reply for the Finn, may 23rd 2006. you say that with more rain forecast grilse should arrive. We were there from 14-20May, on the sunday we arrived it was raining and it poured all week, we got one day only [tues] down below the road bridge beside the gorse, after that it just went pear shaped, it was unfishable. On thursday we saw the Moy, Drowes they were in spate, maybe we left too early. However its the last week in June this year 24th- 1st july, hoping its the right time of year....!

Hi Alby You should have a much better chance of fish at that time of the year. With the Finn there is often a big run of fish that go through in one go sometime during June. Then you get smaller runs with every spate. If you hit it right with the big run there could be 2-3000 fish going through in the space of a few days . As always though it really depends on the weather - no water = no fishing and vice versa as you found out last year! If you want PM me with what you are thinking of doing and I can point you in the right direction E

I went to the Finn today it was in full flood and running dirty. Water level at 6 am this morn was 3 ft and in good nick at 11am it was at 4 and rising and coloured. The weather is to get drier tonight and there aint much rain forcast now for a few days so should be in good nick tomorrow as it settles and the colour runs off.

All, Fished the finn for the first time last week and there is some very nice fly water on it. Was fishing the glenmore stretch, bit unlucky with the water levels but lost a springer at my feet so cant complain. Will go back again soon during a midweek, anyone got any advice re flies etc (finngold took that fish) Also any advice on the Reelan, a guy was saying it is worth a throw later? Many thanks Whitetrout

bad luck losing the fish, still you did well to connect with one given the water levels though yes there is some very nice fly water on the Glenmore stretch, its very much a spate river that high up so you really need the water to fish it at its best. In terms of flies as you have said the Finn Gold works well, also the ever present Cascade is a favourite. As its a peaty river yellow, orange and golds tend to work well - so shrimp patterns such as the Bann Special, Apache, Orange and Gold, Currys Red are good. Also the Silver Wilkinson is a good bet as well. tight lines for your next trip E
