That’s the four free days over and done with. The river was in perfect order, sitting at between 8" and 1ft 3" over the period..
The first fish of the season was taken on Friday the 13th by Hugh Wilson of Glasgow on beat 3 (oasis pool). The fish weighed 9.5lb and was sea liced. Hugh was using a 1" Willie Gunn tube on a sink tip.
On the Saturday the second fish was taken on beat 1, not too sure of who the lucky angler was, but the fish (8lb)was liced and taken on a floating line.
Interestingly, there have been a dozen or so fish believed to have gone over the fish counter at the weir on beat 3 over Friday and Saturday. Hopefully this is the start of a good spring run.

Malcolm
Got the girlfriend to drop me off at the bottom of beat 3 and fished through beats 2 and 1. Only managed a kelt and a very early sea trout/fiinnock of around 1lb???.
It was great to get fishing on such prime water. Will be going back again next year.

What did the poor girl do whilst you fished? If she went into every shop in Helmsdale it would stil leave her hours to kill. I fished 2 last year and thought it was a cracking beat.

Even better. She managed to shop Brora, Helmsdale and Wick all in one day. First time i've managed to take the girlfriend away fishing without a moan ;D. Must be a record.
I, beat two is a cracker. Only the road side pools were being fished by the other fishers, so I managed to get the best of it to myself. Beat 1 would also be hard to beat, it has some classic low water pools.
River Moriston open day tomorrow and with fresh fish being spotted over the last few weeks I would be surprised if a fish isn't taken.

I see from T&S that there is free fishing again on the first few days - any hardy souls from the forum going up to brave the elements?

First fish taken today by Ron Sutherland......see attached report from the Helmsdale Website.
Fishing Report for: January 18, 2007
Salmon caught last week: The first fish was taken today on the Helmsdale by Ronald Sutherland. The pristine fish weighed 13lbs but it had no sea-lice and probably entered the river before opening day due the mild weather, It fell to Ron's favourite Willie Gunn Special (on photo's page) fished on a fast sinking line - Another of Ron's famous extended lunch breaks took him up to beat 6 where he quickly covered the hot spots with a few casts in each. The tail of the Little Rock pool heading up towards the falls was the last port of call before having to rush back to open up again. The river had been dropping steadily for the last 4 days and fishing off the North bank, the Boil below the rock was the last real chance of the day at 1ft 3 and that's exactly where the fish was lying. A 15 minute battle ended half way down the Manse pool and Ron made it back to the shop for 2pm. A great way to spend a lunch break, he'll be doing it more often. The set up for those of you who might be interested, Rod - Guideline 14ft 9" AWM 10/11, Reel - Loop Evotec 9/13, Line - Ian Gordon Spey medium head 10/11 fast sink, Leader - 8ft Seaguar Fluorocarbon 25lbs, Fly - 2" medium weight Willie Gunn Special + Salar gold treble. Association salmon caught: - River height running at: 1ft 3 River temperature: 36 Suggested line density: Full sink Flies of the moment: Willie Gunn Special.
