I was along at the opening day at the River Moriston today. The water and weather conditions were perfect and it wasn't long until yours truely landed the first fish. It weighed around 9lb and was caught on a size 6 willie gunn and fished on a floating line with a small sink tip. The fish was returned. Later on in the day, local fisher Brian (sorry never got his second name) picked up the second. His fish was a around 9/10lb an was caught on a willie gunn tube fished on a full floater. Brian also returned his fish. A handful of kelts were also caught. But the highlight had to be the two fresh fish and the sightings of a number of others. Hopefully this trend will continue for the rest of the spring. The first of the season the second.

Update:
Three fish were taken on the opening week, with the best weighing 12lb (All returned). The best start in decades.
A fourth fish was taken on Monday afternoon, however I have no further details on the catch.
Up loch, 6 miles or so, the first fish of the season was taken on the River Oich last Wednesday by Garham Mackenzie of Inverness. The 11lb fish was taken on a willie gunn and safely returned to the river.

Gordon, I maybe over in Invergarry (visiting relations) after my week fishing on Dee-side in late March. Do you happen to know where I could purchase day tickets for the Glendoe side of the Oich? I used to fish there years ago, (caught my first ever Springer on the Oich) but I'm sure it's not the same guy selling the tickets.
I will assme the Moriston will be fully booked then...right?
cheers

Odd days are still going on the moriston and there are always cancelations, so always worth a phone call ( Ann Girvan - factor - 01320 351300) There are two options for the Oich. - Glendoe - George Watsoln lets tickets for this - £20 per rod per day- tel: 01320 366234 .
- The opposite side is available through Grahams fishing tackle shop in Inverness. This is the best side IMO, and there is a road running by the river, so not as much walking! tel:01463 233178 . You don't have to go into Inverness for your ticket, there is a ghillie on the beat.

there is a ghillie on the beat. Same one as last year Gordon? or is there a new one? Is that the one in the video with the mobile phone and the escaping salmon.

No Rob worse than that his guest was playing a big fish, he was weilding the net and using his mobile, shall we say the fish escaped and his tip was less than he hoped. Unprofessional

Sorry no clips Malcolm. The fish was said to have been in the high 30lb bracket. Needless to say, there were a few harsh words said.
