Look at Fish Dee, Park had another 11 fish today. It has now caught something like 30 fish more so far this season than it did in the whole of 2003!
Lets hope that the spring runs are good everywhere this year.

All things being equal, smaller neighbour the Don should be fishing quite well by now, but news from most beats (that reaches my ears) suggests that all is much quieter than last year - wouldn't surprise me at all if Park outfishes the entire of the Don before the end of May!
Both rivers are very high at the moment though.

As a matter of interest, what are the maximum water heights (on the SEPA gauges listed on Fishdee) at which the Dee is still fishable? I saw that it was well over 4' at Park yesterday morning, and was surprised to see so many fish come off it - is this to be expected at this height of water?

Thanks Graham - useful point. Hopefully I'll get a go down the Cellar. Will be interesting to see the beat in higher water.
Will post up our trip to Park/Commonty next week. Apparently the latter can be ok with a wee bit more water (as now), so fingers crossed.

I hope they tipped well.
My ambition: To make use of Malcolm's services, and let him fish after lunch when I have 6 "on the bank"!
One day.............

I see Lower Crather and West Durris had a good catch yesterday (14 fish). Per rod/fish the best beat on the Dee without a dout, would love to get a cast on it one day. Untill then I'll keep dreaming .

Hmmm, i was told by the other rods and Brian on Crathes that lower Crathes 'is' the best beat on the river.
People soon bipass the fact that Park has more than twice the number of rods on it.........

It was a great month for park but when you work out the catch per rod per day it doesn't look that amazing.
Assuming that all 12 rods fished every available day of March this give us 12 x 27 = 324 Rod days
129 Fish caught / 324 days = 0.4 fish per rod per day, so many of the smaller beats will have had more fish per rod. Still wouldn't have minded a few days on park though.

"Hmmm, i was told by the other rods and Brian on Crathes that lower Crathes 'is' the best beat on the river."
Tyne Andrew,
Would have to say that Brian is probably right certainly for numbers of springers per rod. Lower Crathes & West Durris also has double bank fishing for 4 rods, 2 ghillies (proper ghillies) & water that can fish well with 5 feet on the guage with other pools which fish well at a spread of heights. With any kind of decent water running there are more pools than can be properly covered in a short spring day. What a refreshing change to most beats which can end up overrodded when water levels slip away, particularly if you have opposition on the opposite bank. Lower Crathes has some stunningly productive pools which fish like a dream with the fly. I have only fished it as a guest but in some of these days it has given memorable sport.
On the other hand I have only fished Park some years ago once on the North Bank & my impression was that there were too many manmade walkways for my personal liking (prefer wading). All you Park fans please don't take offence - I am sure there is some lovely water there & I do remember that the Durris stream fished beautifully but I don't think there is any comparison with Lower Crathes. Problem is the way Lower Crathes has fished in the last few years, any incumbent tenants are unlikely to give up there lets (unless they fall off the perch or lose their marbles!)

A rumour open for comment.
I have been told by an experienced ghille that many of the fish reported as fresh on the Dee are kelts, as it is all catch and release the beat ghillie has to take the word of the fisher.
This is based on the party of 4 catching more than 15 kelts on a particular beat giving the water a rest for a while hopin gthat the kelts would shift and then fishing again for 9 more kelts. On Fishdee the same day massive catches of "fresh" fish were reported.
A strange occurence?
