Just returned home from my first week of many at the above beat, so a quick summary.
We had a memorable week fishing with Bill Currie on some great water with plenty of fish about although not so easily tempted. We caught 7 springers and 2 sea trout for our week and the Birse rods opposite us had 9 i think, mostly from the Lummels and Irrrigation. I managed 3 of the salmon largest 14lb's and both the sea trout and also lost a couple of fish, one of which spat the hook whilst 2ft in the air with my closing casts on Saturday evening.
A fantastic beat with some very varied water which keeps things interesting, the Lummels is a very special pool especially at 1ft 6" and above but still still very nice in lower water. On Tuesday morning at 1ft 8" there were so many fish showing and this is when the largest fish for me was taken after a battle of over 20mins. Irrigation certainly holds a lot of fish and fishes well at any height and Red Rock is also a lovely little pool and produced a few fish for us.
The weather was not great for fishing; blistering sunshine and red hot for the first 3 and a half days. We spent 7hrs in the hut after lunch on these days tying flies to Bill's specification and enjoying cool white wines! Indeed, all our fish caught for the week were caught on the flies we tied up during those sultry afternoon's.
We had a good relationship with our opposition which made things very enjoyable, i dread to imagine what it would be like the other way round. Although when arriving at some parts of the beat at equal times we did observe an angler braking into a slow trot to get the first pickings
Thanks for all the advice on the beat from those who know it before out trip.
