Looks like a fine day in July - was that today ? With water levels any lower the cows and sheep will loose their drinking hole - let alone any fish running. Need rain badly .... I'm up on the last Saturday of the season. It was wednesday there (17th) plenty of fish around, but we only managed 2 (both returned) will pop my head in the last saturday and say hi www.kinkellfishings.co.uk

Look forward to meeting up with you again TG, hope the season's been a good one - just wish a nice 2" rise would come by Tuesday, fall back and clear to 1" for Friday - then a sharp frost late on Friday night, warming up again for 8.00am Saturday.
Think that's asking for too much ??
See you soon.
Altmor.

On a roving mission, your three moderators were out yesterday braving the elements, in search of new, prolific pastures for the forum member's benefit. Destination, the River Earn at Kinkell, the intrepid explorers, Fruin, DonnieW, myself and a "hired" hit-rod, renowned for pulling fish out the hat when conditions are against us. (The hired hit-rod has not yet elevated himself to the ranks of the forum membership, preferring to "work" alone, in the fashion of all best assassins. Conditions - woeful. The river sat at 470mm on the gauge, (as low as the lowest summer recorded), and registered a mere 46deg on Fruin's thermometer. Leaves the size of kitchen floor rugs were concentrated into the neck flows, giving DonnieW a somewhat insurmountable challenge in trying to christen his new rod. Here looking upstream from "green hut" toward "tam's" and the tail of "houston's", shows what we were up against. Not to be beaten by conditions, we battled hard over the course of the day, till the heavens opened late on in the afternoon, bringing more leaves the size of scaffold advertisement banners, down the paltry flow. DonnieW, desperate to connect and christen his rod, persevered and here is seen stealthily retreating from an exposed casting croy on one of the pools from which he didn't catch a fish. ...... Well, I'm not going to ruin a good account of a normally good river, fished in it's prime week, with pics of fish all over the place ... that would just be ... well ... too passe. AND to rub salt into our wounds, another fishing guru, who opted to "have a chuck" on the River Awe, whilst we were by this point "beaten" into submission, called at 4.30pm to recount he'd had 4 licers and was now packing down to enjoy an evening of fine wine and banter at the rockin' Bridge of Orchy Hotel as an end of season bash. All the same a cracking day out on the water, testing our collective wits and experience with everything from small flies to big flies, mini-tubes, collie dogs, full floaters, sink tips and intermediates - but alas we failed you forum ... will we be forgiven ? Altmor. PS, the ghillie, Sandy, reckons Monday will be good with the rain over Saturday pm and early Sunday morn !!!

Altmor, 'Tis was a fine day even with the lack of fish. I think the small dash in the breakfast coffee, and the splashing of red wine with the superb lunchtime pastries helped to keep the smile on my face, against the will of the adverse conditions. Always a pleasure to be on Kinkell. Fine pools, fine streams, and a fine ghillie to boot! It was nice to meet yourself(again), Donnie, and the hired hit rod Graham. It would have been a joy to fish it in another 1- 2 foot of water, but the company was excellent The leaf storm blowing through the pools drove me mental towards the end of the afternoon, but that's autumn fishing for you Here we have Altmor, Donnie and the Jackal discussing tactics at the green hut (apologise for the focus) ...

Hi all.............was just wondering if that 5ft rise of water on Sunday brought in the run we've all been waiting for........albeit somewhat late. Cant help the weather unfortunately. Heard there were a few fresh fish coming over Dornoch Dam below Crieff and a couple of stale fish caught and returned near Comrie. Its mainly Ruchill water coming down as not much is being generated at the Power station at Dalchonzie. We are supposed to get freshets (9?)on top of the paltry compensation flow but where are they??It must have been a good day on Kinkell water today?? Any news anyone?

Ahm away to cry like a wee lassie Think DonnieW's still in sulking mode - either that or he got lost on the way home. Haven't seen him for donkeys. I suspect he's back up to the S. Esk or Don to christen the new rod, and we'll be adorned with dozens of pics of fine salmo statues. Might sneak up to the Endrick tomorrow - just for a last fling on the last day.

I'm off tomorrow, and will either hit the Endrick, Fruin or Leven, depending on conditions; a wee last day chuck as usual
