Yes, I was one of the mad ones. 2 and half days fishing in a gentle breeze produced one small kelt for me. At 15.00 today, no springer had been caught.
How did others fair?

I had 4 kelts and a finnock. One of the kelts this morning out of Kilphedir was muckle and gave one or two impressive runs before revealing it's true identity.
Some of the most testing conditions to stand upright never mind cast a line ! At least I am now home safe and well unlike poor old Jill of Scottish Women National Team fame who fell and broke a leg yesterday on the river.

Nice one Jock. I was referring to the 90mph gusts of wind during the day but at night, yes your logic applies. On the Friday night we were partying and singing until 2.30am in the morning in the Bridge Hotel. Great atmosphere. My mate and I still managed to be on the River on Sat. morning. Good trip but only for the hardy.

3 of us fished Friday and Saturday, testing conditions to say the least. A big bonus to be able to cast of botrh shoulders.
BUt jmore importantly what a great looking river, we will definitely be trying to get on later in the year.
A big thanks to Ronnie at the tackle shop, Lorraine and staff at the Bridge and to all those dedicated distiller and brewers whose drinks eased the pain of kelt catching but not fish catching, roll on the season!!!

Good to see the River Helmsdale has picked up. 60 fish last week and 15 on Monday. Hopefully there is a late run on the go. Only time will tell.

A chance invitation to fish for 3 days on the Helmsdale last week sharing a rod with Mrs Fish worked out well. The first half of the week had been tough going (for the Helmsdale) with 9 fish for the 2 rods. Mrs Fish and I had a sealiced fish each on the Thursday which was an encouraging start plus another two hooked and lost but the water was rising and colouring after rain up country. Friday was a major disappointment as the water had gone up to 1' 11" and coloured and we were on Beat 1 which is usually hot fishing in lower water but poor in high. We visited Dunrobin Castle instead which was interesting but not exactly what I had in mind. The situation was saved on Saturday on Beat 6 Below the Falls. The level had fallen back to 9" and fresh fish had piled in but were not running the falls which were still strong. Result 15 sealiced grilse between the 2 rods including one from the previous evening (you change beats at 8pm the night before). Thus one day transformed an indifferent week into a brilliant one. Right place at right time etc. Fortunately I have an understanding wife as I opted out of dinner to make the most of the opportunity. Thus I fished Beat 6 right through to 8pm when I moved down to Craggie Bend on Beat 5 and took another 2 sealicers before dark. Wonderful fishing in wild scenery. I realise I am a lucky boy. MRS FISH APPLIES PRESSURE IN THE SWIRL SAFELY IN THE NET HOOKED IN THE FALLS POOL ANOTHER QUICKLY FOLLOWED NEARLY THERE THE GRILSE WERE IN GOOD ORDER NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED. TWO OF MY FISH WERE TAKEN WADING ALONG A NARROW LEDGE UNDER THE OVERHANGING ROCK IN THE FOREGROUND. THE FAMOUS BORROBOL GHILLIE JOHNNY "HARDY" WHO RETIRES AT THE END OF THIS YEAR, THE FISH WITH FISH. IT TOOK THE FLY SO FAR BACK IN THE VOMERS THAT RELEASE WAS NOT AN OPTION. I hope I am not becoming boring with this type of post. Somebody tell me if I am and I will desist although it is nice to share good fortune and news of fish finally arriving in good numbers with like minded individuals. The Fish

I'm up fishing in the KOS next week and was thinking of paying the Association water on the Helmsdale a day visit, I've never fished it only driven past on my way North. Couple of questions: Is it tidal? and if tidal how long do you get fishing? Also how busy is it likely to be?
Thanks,
Jock

Couple of questions: Is it tidal? and if tidal how long do you get fishing? Also how busy is it likely to be? Thanks, Jock Jock, I've never fished the Association Water but I know that it can be good in low water. Last Monday I think they had 12 off it. The lower pools are tidal but Ronald Sutherland had a fish on the Sunray that day off a pool which was being backed up by the tide. He pulled 2 others on it and had landed another 2 earlier in the morning. One drawback to visitors.....they are not allowed on before 8am and you can be sure that some of the local aces will have given the water a good going over by then. With grilse flying through it should still be worth a cast in August however especially a couple of hours each side of the tide. Speak to Ronald Sutherland who runs the local tackle shop Tel no 01431821372. He is an expert angler and knows all the wrinkles for the Helmsdale. Hope this helps. Jim.

Thanks Jim. If low water I'll probably give it a visit. 8am was never on my agenda, 8pm might be if visitors are allowed late. I'll check tide times before I go. I'll mainly be fishing the Oykel but was looking to have a cast elsewhere if conditions suited. Maybe I'll be able to post a report that includes catching salmon rather than leaving it all to you and Salmonking

Never boring Jim, but can I ask you to pick 6 numbers for my lottery ticket this weekend! ;D
Looking at the wading on that ledge, you deserved a fish for sheer bravery!
