Was looking through my fly box and i realised i don't have many big, gaudy patterns so i've knocked up a few of these beasts. When i get some yellow templedog hair i'll replace the orange in the wing. Think it looks like a great spring pattern. Tied on a 1 1/2 inch plastic tube, going to whack a conehead on the next one. Bored tonight so i thought i'd stick it one here for some criticism. Cheers ta Ps , got my season ticket for the LLAIA paid for today, so you might see me flinging one of these about in the coming weeks fellow members! ;D

Looks like it would do some damage back end on most rivers. As you say, substitute the orange for yellow, and you've got the makings of a very good spring fly.

Like it, plenty of hackle to give it some life.

cheers lads. It's a nice big, soft cock hackle that should move nicely. It also holds the hair up nicely and keeps it from wrapping round the hook. I prefer not to fold the hair to m,ake it stand, as you can end up with a huge head, the large hackle is a good way of getting round this

Funny you should say that Lomond, I had one jungle cock feather left (waiting on more arriving) so i split it in half, tied it in and it looked great. That is until i took it out of the vice to discover the farside cheek had fallen off and i couldn't find it again! I've done a slightly differnt verson acyually but i'm not sure about it. I'll post it fo perusal

Here's a big gaudy yellow version with boar bristles as a tail. I'm sticking boar bristles on everything at the moment you might have noticed! This one's a conehead. The idea is that the soft body hackle will collapse slightly in the water and give it a nice transparent look, whilst supposting the wing and giving good movement.

Lomond, i'm always a bit wary of putting too much flash in patterns. If i use a shiny body then i'll leave it out. But i know where you're coming from. I'll definitely have one or two with a flashier wing

Granters, another good fly that will get you fish on the Leven. A big water fly for the springers. A bit of crystal flash on the black wing would finish it off nicely IMO. Should have some Alu and brass versions in your amo.

Look forward to seeing you on the Leven one day. But i noticed you seem to have some slight gender issues. Is it a pheromone = big fish type of thing? Only joking mate, keep looking at the forum, it's the most useful place for learning fromother people and stealing ideas for flies! ;D
