Remember mine very clearly as I was on the Dee at Mill O' Dess. It was after the season as they were fishing for hens to gather eggs for the hatchery. My wife worked with the owners sister-in-law and so me and my pal turned up with some spinning gear. the gillie there was Colin Simpson and he kindly lent me tackle (16' rod)and gave me some tuition and that was me hooked. Didn't catch anything though.

Was invited to the Tweed in November by my boss, who is a serious fisher.
I met up with the rest of the rods in the morning, bewildering experience. Told to set the rod up they are effing long compared to a trout rod.
Off with the back end ghillie, a retired estate agent, and began to fish. Overhead casting with a wet2 line and a 2" copper tube. It was bloody dangerous!!!
Next I know my boss is marching toward me in a fairly motivated way.
" Will you start spey casting or %$£$% off the river it is embarrassing" to me, turning to the ghillie " Make sure he spey casts" turned on his heels and left.
I asked the ghillie who had less than an idea how to cast and we proceeded to teach each other the single spey.
A lot say that my casting hasn't moved on that far!!

Sagefly,
I'm glad I don't have to fish with your boss. I suppose a bit of gentle guidance is not his style?
I remember my first day out with a two hander. After much greeting and whining, my parents got me a 12ft Daiwa C98 and a Shakespeare Super Condex reel with a sinking line for Christmas one year (I was about 11 yo). I tied up some flies, dreadful things, and set off to the river with the rod once the season had started. On my first outing I hooked a big fish and lost it. I just had no idea what to do.
I still have the fly in my parents house somewhere.
I never really fished the two handed rod much as I had nobody to show me how to cast properly. It wasn't until about 4 years ago that I bought a 16ft rod then a 15ft rod and started to use the double handed rod more regularly.

My first cast with a double hander was about 5 years ago, I had just treated myself to a rod reel and line which was on offer in the local tackle shop and was keen as mustard to give it a try. The river was low so I knew that I would have it to myself and have no spectators. After about 10 mins I started to get the hang of things and started to do something that resembled a single spey and was getting about 15 to 20 yds of line out the end of the rod. A few weeks later I had a 5 minute lesson with friend and have not looked back since. Why did I wait until I was 23 to start fly fishing for salmon, can't get enough of it now and get a real buzz from casting well.

First cast was on the Ericht more than 30yrs ago, I had watched the local overhead experts so I had a good idea of it. About 12 yrs ago on the Tay I had a go at Spey casting , After I had untangled myself from the line I slowed down a bit ! I was stumbling about trying to get better at it until I met Garry Coxton of Sage rods,he was a huge influence.I then improved a bit more with practice until I reached the dizzy heights of being able ,with a Spey line of course, to cast.................17yards ! ! ! Seriously I have been lucky enough to meet and fish with some the APGAI instructors which was a huge help to me in helping others to Spey cast. I do get huge enjoyment out of that.

1979 - Forglen on Deveron with my bank manager and a new Bruce and Walker carbon 2 hander.
I thought I was in a straightjacket, so dumped it and returned to my 11 ft Sharpes cane single hander. Went home with 8 seatrout. Different politics now so wouldn't keep all the fish.

My first attempts must have been very funny to see... on grass, not knowing what to do, without any guidance. Glad it was not on video.... It was not until Goran Andersson gave me some lessons that I managed to feel what the rod and line did... Hans.

Having fished with a trout rod for about 50 years. I thought it was about time I tried the double hander before I got too long in the tooth ;D Anyway at first I was all over the place because it felt so odd after using the single handed rod for so many years then I thought I'll get some lessons from Gwilym Hughes and after spending a couple of hours with Gwilym it all started to come right. Well nearly All I have to do now is practice = practice = practice Tight lines JAD

OK I'll give you all a laugh. This is the first time with the doublehander, as you can see I'm getting in a right mess, not knowing what hand goes where or does what. I gave up on the spey casts and started to snake roll. It can only get better as they say. ;D

Coming from a complete amateur with a double hander like me. That looks OK Paul. Anyway I was hoping to give it a go some time next week depending on the river conditions

My first double hander was an Ugly stik, 14'-0", and like fruin i had a super condex reel. the only thing about this rod was i could not cast it, funny but when somebody else uses it its no problem, but when i do it, nothing goes right and i blame the rod, which is'nt true, but just too scared to admit it. So i switch to a single hander CF98, 11'-3" 7/9,which i loved, but now i have upgraded to a Slate Spx 15'-0" 10/11, and my old Daiwa 813w reel, loaded with a John Monteith full floater 10/11 spey. and does'nt it fly, what a line. If only Airflo had went down the road with Dacron before and not wasted it on Mono cores!!!!!!!!!!!!!
