I noticed in the discussion on the "French" Thread that a whole new sub-debate had opened up on French vs. Australian, Chilean Italian etc wine , so I thought it might be a good idea for everyone to pass on their specific favourites. Now anyone can list Chateau Latour 82 or Domaine de la Romanee Conti, La Tache 85 as the best thing since sliced bread, so to make it interesting lets cap it at around a tenner a bottle and see if we can unearth a few hidden gems that may show up in fishing hut lunches around the UK rivers this year and perhaps settle the Chilean/Aus/French/Italian debate. I'll kick things off: Red - Antinori Villa Antionri, Toscana Rosso 2002/2003 - Waitrose £9.49 (Italy) White- Grand Vina Sol, Miguel Torres 2006 - Thresher £6.99 (Spain) So come on everyone , get guzzling and let us know what the best deals are. Recommendations from Ghillies who have no doubt already sampled a wide selection this season, especially welcome cheers Splash

Tesco's Finest Fleurie. £6.99. That's the grog that Para1 refuses to believe is French. It is and it's a wee cracker.

Anything red, wet and strong. I tend to find it all tastes the same after the first bottle and a half.
I vaguely recall Willie Gunn producing a rather fine Australian Red from the depths of his supply's sometime during our April Spey visit, a good 15% plus if I recall.
I'm sure Malcolm, Charlie or Andrew will recall its name, than again perhaps not....

Chateau Musar from the Lebanon fits the bill here 14-15% and a heady mix of cabernet sauvignon, cinsault and carignan but unfortunately its slipped to over the tenner mark(£13.29 in Waitrose). Put your prejudices aside and try it (aye you too Springer) as its super stuff akin to serious classed growth claret at a fraction of the price

Reds Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc - Free from the brother in law in exchange for a small amount of wild smoked salmon, the only way we can afford it Kim Crawford 2006 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand. Better than Cloudy Bay at half the price. Should be under a tenner in the Wineshops but find a good wholesale supplier and will cost approx £7.50 by the case or half case.

Sounds just the tipple, must try it, Cloudy Bay is nice but not brill, the exclusivity maintains a silly price that I fortunately don't have to pay. Less precious smoked to the brother in law could be imminent

Don't know if this is just a local deal but the Tesco in my area is currently offering 30% off all wines if you buy 6 bottles or more. The six bottles can be mixed. Great offer which I stumbled on by chance yesterday. The discount also applies to wines which they already have on special offer so some really good buys going eg Oyster Bay Sauvignon £4.20. Offer ends this Sunday.

Assuming it is no older than 2006 Oyster Bay Sauv, it's hard to imagine a better blend of quality and price in the UK than this wine for £2.94 - it's cheaper than Buckfast ;D Otherwise I'd nominate 2005 Firestick Chardonnay from Oz circa £7 from many independant wine merchants - it has what so many new world chardonnays lack; balance Regards CLaG

Funnily enough after encountering the new "security" arrangements at Edinburgh airport last Sunday, ie having to walk a mile and a half from the slip road from the dual carriageway to the airport terminal, I was struck , nay dismayed, by the preponderance of empty buckie bottles amongst the empties lying around after the Royal Highland Show weekend. It looks the the Jakeys/Old Firm fans beverage of choice is now de rigeur as the favourite tipple of the well heeled farming set
