They do recommend that the first fish is released, that is a fact. We did'nt release any today but that is because we did'nt fish ! .The river was way too high and there was a bit of a gale blowing,, Too risky. We sat around and righted the wrongs, everyone had gone by lunchtime So our new ghillie Gary had an easy intro to Kercock on his first day ! I did'nt see the post containing the invitation to the party, All in all a sh#t day really

Certainly learning alot about the Tay in this thread.
The water looked mighty high at Newtyle from the news clip. I bet the boil was really boiling at that height!

Jock - did you not fancy tying to swim across the tail of the Cotters on opening day?

Your conclusion seems to me clear; he/they are incompetent muppets who are not elected on merit? Sounds like my workplace. You need a plan Willlie.

Like it hornet; no I'm just an ordinary angler (and scientist) who has practised conservation, personally for a long time; who believes in and loves sustainable wild fisheries and who admires someone who (unlike me) has the balls to stand up and put himself on the line by saying things that aint always easy to say.

Didn't see the article but "Silver Wilkie" is Arnott McWhinnie, crime reporter. He is a good flyfisher and now lives on the banks of the Tay where he has fished most of his life.

lets be honest here....... as far as i'm concerned the Daily Record is complete drivel! I think the fact that it is out-sold by the SUN in Scotland says it all......... my Dad does tell me though that many years ago it did run "proper investigative stories" and had proper journalists?

The salmon fishing season states the earliest date and the latest date that you can legally fish for salmon but at the end of the day its upto the beat owners how many of these available days they choose to fish. Willie The Gillie I applaud you and your boss for standing by what you believe is right for the fishing you control. I hope others take note. A 2 week delay is hardly a draconian measure.
I take it the ones that are up in arms enjoy the "action" with the kelts, round up these catch at all cost people and send them to a heavily stocked still water for some "challenging" stockie bashing.

I have been following this thread with great interest, as many others have i am sure, and i have to say fair play to Jock for standing up to the dinosaurs who call themselfs the TDSFB. When are they going to open their eye's!!! Many beats on other rivers, i am thinking of the Dee & the Don, do not start fishing until well after the official opening day. These decisions have been made more to protect the kelts as opposed to fish that have not yet spawned, but it's all in the name of conservation at the end of the day. The Tay does seem to have more baggots & rawners than most rivers in jan & feb, so delaying the start can only help. The improvement of spawning burns is also paramount to increased stocks, especially spring stocks IMO, which is now starting to be proven on the likes of the Dee. Keep up the good work Jock.

Surely with the amount of opposition that is growing against the start date then somebody in authority has to take note/wakeup/change from tradition and have the Salmon conservation as number 1 priority.
The stance at Newtyle needs to be applauded and completely encouraged, but not just on the Tay, it should be carried out for all of our rivers that give concern.

Did not really see you as a Record man Jim Correct Malcolm I am a Herald man but in my youth I won the Daily Record "Fish of the Week" competition on a number of occasions till Arnott told me to stop applying. All Weegies have read the Record at one time or another. I have also fished with Arnott as a fellow guest on the Tay over the last 20 years or so and while I am not defending his article (which I have not seen) he can fish. For my own part, I support John Monteith's views about delaying the opening of the Tay Season 100%. For years I fished Taymount in the third week of January but over the last 5 years, maybe more, the number of baggots and rawners hooked has increased dramatically in parallel to the reduction in number of springers. Same applies to the Tummel where I get an invitation to the opening day every year since 1989. The last opening day springer was caught in 1989 whereas the number of unspawned mature fish increases.

For many years the Spey has opened on Feb 11th, at least 2 estates thought that this was too early and did not open till the 1st week of March or April, but they made their own decisions rather than questioning the board or rubbishing them on a public forum, there are ways and means.

Malcolm
I think you have the wrong end of the stick here
In no way is Jock rubbishing the board, he is simply stating the full facts as he sees it and which are there for all to see in there entirety
