I agree with Johnmac. If people don't ever post they are simply consumers, and the world is already too full of them. There are plenty of precedents on the web for active forums i.e. if you don't contribute anything from time to time yer oot. The flip side is that a lot of people need to have their confidence built up before they go public. So a key role of moderators is to nail plonkers who dis newbies (excepting Trolls and other bogus muppets).
On that point (related), I don't know Colin personally, so what i have to say is simply the view of an outsider looking in at the current situation. I have run a lot of societies, clubs, syndicates, organisations and businesses in my time. There is one recurring truth: you either do it or you don't; you can't run them effectively as an absentee landlord, or you will neither create value or pretty quickly destroy the value you have previously created.
So Colin, I respectfully suggest you consider either taking up the reigns again or fully handing them over; both are honourable courses of action, and from the feedback of the active members on this site, either would be welcome choices - the status quo appears not (with no offence intended to the current moderators whose powers are neutered by default).
Regards
CLaG

last back end i found this forum. and I'm stuck like glue to the thing i have gained info on beats had Pm's on tackle, fishing, etc basically its opened up a new word of fishing to me! I'm only 24 with basic working man education. i would never slag off a fellow fisherman for his views or grammar. fair play i have had a dig at scotty9nro and notipping just for being nut sacks one for poaching and one for stupid comments on the great kerkock thread. this is first time i have been involved in this kind of post but please keep it informative. we have the lounge section rip each other to shreds there ;D I'm on here to learn more about salmon fishing not have a slagging match thanks Scott

There is only one problem with doing this, the board is set up so that you need to register to access all areas. Deleting the non posting members would require them to register again to read the posts. The boards would need to be changed to everyone read/register to post to get around this.
Thank you for the extra Administrators Colin, just what we needed.

I would say that I have been a 'consumer' so far - purely because I don't have enough experience and knowledge to contribute much. Where there have been threads that I have been able to contribute to I have.
I have, however, noticed a deterioration in the board recently and I do not think that it it due to a lack of good information being posted - it is just a lot harder to get to it with all the other stuff that is going on at the moment.
What I look for, and what I hope to be able to contribute, is good information, in a way that is easy to read and understand, which is (as much as possible) not offensive.
If somebody posts something which I find difficult to read (in terms of style or language - for instance I am Scots but I struggle to read and understand phonetically written Scots) then I am disinclined to read it and I miss out on that information. If there is a thread which disintegrates into a slanging match then I am disinclined to read that thread. In both of these cases I am the loser because I miss out on the information that is there (as an example I am going to Kercock in September and I seriously doubt if I will open the Kercock thread before then because it is increasingly full of rubbish).
There is a massive amount of good information on here and I hope to be able to continue to be part of this forum, however there are some people on here who seem to be capable of starting a fight with their own shadows and they are dragging this down and making it harder to get the good out of the forum, we are becoming like a good pub with increasingly bad customers - its getting harder to enjoy a quiet beer in good company without somebody asking if you have "spilled their pint" and asking you outside for a fight. If this means that we need more or bigger bouncers/moderators on the door to stop the trouble then so be it.

Thank you for the extra Administrators Colin, just what we needed. PB Its a fair thing to raise. However, that's how the forum boards I use work. I think it is worth pointing out all it means is that once in a while a member has to: 1) show an act of support by a simple one liner to say thanks that was helpful/useful post on tackle review, beat report, flies, technique etc, (NB, unless clearly banter between posters who know each other, one liners disagreeing along the lines of yer talkin' mince pal with no supporting counter argument should be moderated out as no value added destructive criticism). 2) make a request for help/advice on tackle, technique etc 3) write a post that might lead to the response in 1. 1 takes 10 seconds, 2 a little longer and 3 as long as you want. Either way, as a prospective or actual salmon fisher and enough interest to be here in the first place how can you not have anything at all to say in 1 - 3? 1 is a simple matter of courtesy to members making an effort. If you can't even be bothered to do that you are no loss to a forum that can only thrive on voluntary contribution. In terms of frequency, most boards say if you are dormant for six months you lapse. These boards spell that out in big letters up front; it's the norm as an internet convention so why not here? Remember, according to Greek Mythology, 300 active members make a Spartan army Regards CLaG p.s. apologies, in the original post, for not noticing the spell checker replaced a miss-typed 'reins' with 'reigns'...although some might say they are equally appropriate !

d - "consumer" was a definition for the person identified in the original thread who is dormant, which you, from your posting record, are clearly not. See my second post to suggest how you define this more clearly. If you think that suggestion is unfair and unreasonable or could be structured better then feedback is what this thread is supposed to be about mais non? - regards CLaG

No problem Ross.
Springer, if you wish to keep this board going then disregard my previous suggestion. I think we all need to engage with Colin, so that he is clear about the strength of feeling about the way the board is going. I'm sure he will listen as he has done a fine good setting this up.
I wish you all a most pleasant day, particularly those lucky enough to be fishing.
Rob

I noticed Colin was logged on last night, he must be aware of this situation.
Aah - just noticed that WG & GR have been promoted to Administrators, so action has been taken.
Thanks Colin!

Best wishes to the new team. Police us well. Jail the unworthy, let those who visit regularly, even without contributing, stay and access the experience of others.
The future of the board is now in your hands.

Aah - just noticed that WG & GR have been promoted to Administrators, so action has been taken. Thanks Colin! Does this mean that they have now been given full administrator authority? ie to sort out the rubbish in the kercock thread, remove offensive members etc? If so then it's good news and something good that has come from this thread and it's many opinions. As I see it, the only people who can take this forum in the right direction are the people who use it, if one makes a noise about something which is echoed by many, it gets easier to move toward a common goal. I'm in agreement with robmason, have a good day lads, especially if you're out fishing.

Would be good to see CLaG being appointed as a mod or admin as his posts to the forum are of a high standard of logic, fishing knowledge manners and courtesy to all, apart from which he is in all probability the smartest mind on the forum imho. There are no signs of page rage issues with him which seems to be afflicting a few members off late all too sadly.Long may the forum rock on. By the way can some kind member offer me a bit of advice. If you are wearing wellies what is the best way of keeping your tootsies warm in this cold weather? Neoprene socks? multi layers? Cos my feet have been as cold as xxxx the last few days on the river bank Cheers lads
