Noticed 3 things of interest, from a quick glance:
Article on DT lines by MacD senior.
Article on salmon shooting head lines
Nice beat on the Tyne for sale, offers > £100k (sell your house Alan?) ;D
One thing that wasn't of interest - the fishing report for the Conwy was mostly about freshwater mussels. I know it's quiet, but......................

Indeed there was Malcom, and a response from AGS:

Ah I see AGS poured some petrol on to the flames to try and put the fire out.

There seems to be a similar exchange of letters about extending the Dee season.

Having followed AGS reports over a number of years, he may well be bold with his opinions but they are normally very well supported. I firmy believe that he has a great passion for the survival and resurgence of our Salmon stocks, especially Spring Fish and unfortunately the only means of progress with regard to conservation policies is through public exposure, positive or negative.
I realise that stats can be manipulated in any favour but if indeed AGS facts are genuine on last years so-called conservation policy ( 1 fish allowed to be retained per rod, per day ) then I think he has been pretty lenient in his attack. Mr McConnell may have been better running for cover rather than giving AGS further opportunity of exposure.
I'm pretty confident that AGS remarks were made purely under the caveat of conservation and do hope that he was not in any way encouraged by proprietors of beats above the Poolie Falls who get very few fish before the temperature barrier is overcome, otherwise it may be interpreted to a certain extent as sour grapes. Either way, the policy will hopefully have been reviewed in the close season, and if not, following the recent debate most certainly should be now.

Excellent article on Collie Dogs too Yes I missed that, a good read. Also enjoyed the article about Hugh Falkus, adapted from a new book to be published in the autumn. I hadn't realised HF had been married 4 times - surprised he found time for all that night fishing!

Yes, he kept getting married until he found a wife who [glow=red,2,300]came [/glow]with a river. Interesting choice of words Steve! Did you enjoy the article about freshwater mussels in the Conwy report?

Alan, the beat for sale on the Tyne is just below Bywell, which sounds promising.
Is it any good for fly?

1.6 miles at Eltringham, owned by the Humble family for over 100 years. Let to Newcastle Angling club for last 30 years and mainly fished for coarse fish.
Immediately below Bywell beat, offers over £85k - sounds underpriced!
Photo in the mag looks like some nice fly water - perhaps it an April Fool's joke!

Yes, I suspect you are right about parts of the river being poor for salmon.
Do you know the rough split between catches on main Tyne, North & South?

Jock He tends to be a little single minded in his approach, his attack on the Dingwall club on the Conon was a bit one sided, yes they kill afew fish but they have a lot of anglers and catch a fish and you are off the water, now whether you save more salmon by catching one and going home or catching 20 and killing 10 is an interesting discussion. I refuse to enter the debate on the Findhorn, I know all parties too well.

. people will be attracted by the easier traveling distance than Scotland. Oh I do hope so. Thats 200 rod days need to be sold to get a 5% return, better off buying a flat in Gateshead, a better investment IMO What is the catch rate in Gateshead? A hooker a day? What are the chances of catching something?

I refuse to enter the debate on the Findhorn, I know all parties too well. I know the Findhorn well, clearly the issue that gets AGS so wound up is the inconsistancy of the application of the conservation measures. Moray estates do kill a lot of Spring fish relative to the other beats, however the kill is a lot less than it used to be, so it has to be said we are progressing in the right direction. Ten years ago nearly all the springers were being killed up and down the length of the river, who knows in ten years time we might be all c&r, it's a cultural thing and it takes time to change peoples attitudes towards conservation. The encouraging thing is that the juvenille surveys are as good as ever, so the river appears to be in good heart. Its the issues out at sea we need to sort out now.

I know the water now. It has been let as Stocksfield Hall fishings and was both fished on day tickets and by a club that TyneAngler and TyneAndrew belong. It is mainly spinning water with poor access to the banks due to thick cover. The tail in the picture is one of only a couple of bits suitable for the fly but not productive by most standards. I think we will see more of this happening, people will be attracted by the easier traveling distance than Scotland. The quality of water falls into the £25/day bracket. Thats 200 rod days need to be sold to get a 5% return, better off buying a flat in Gateshead, a better investment IMO Alan You sure its not the Big Waters Stretch which is being advertised? Have not read the advert but I know its up for sale and would fit in with the description elwyman posted above.

The picture is of Merryshields off the right bank and it is the Big Waters section - would not pay £50 a year to fish it.
Can't imagine more than 30 odd fish p.a coming off it

Stockfield Hall water stops above the stream on the south bank, and the water you are on about is directly below this , only the north bank of the top stream can be fished by Stockfield hall day tickets along with members of Thropton club.Northumberland anglers have the north bank opposit the water up for sale. this is the best bank to fish the top from as only the top stream is fishable from the other bank.
