Peter D Malloch of Perth would be rolling in his grave if he saw his name spelt that way. Malcom I am surprised you missed that one :) Surely you're not going to let him away with that , Mr Gumm ! I was asked to stop picking up on others peoples spelling mistakes ..........so I did.

...............I'm eager to see is a zpey rod,........................... The concept of the spring in the base could make many of today's top fly rods seem run of the mill. rpsalmon, Spring ?? Could you please elaborate. Dave.

RPS,
Retraction-thought you meant Francis Grant not Alexander.
Grant not granted then.
RP-many of your posts sound like the grandoise tosh that Crawford Little spouts in the Ednam bar at the back end.
Please confirm you don't share the same antedulivian transfusion service as it seems to me you could well do.

Dear Dave The "spring" I referred to is what I understood to be at the base of the blank, and is one or more pieces of metal connecting the bottom "bent" handle to the reel seat/blank. From what I have gathered, this "spring" gives a kick of energy to the base of the blank before the blank has really started to flex and therefore allows more powerful casts without any greater exertion by the angler. My information is second hand and interpreted, the person told me had back problems and said the rod made things easy for him. He had to use the line with the rod but he though that he could cast 15% further with the Zpey rod than with conventional rods. His timing and cast had to change a bit, and he thought a number of spey lines on the market couldn't be used effectively with the rod. If it is true about a spring giving a kick to the flexing process, and I don;t doubt the person who told me, then that is how I think the Zpey rod may make existing rods "run of the mill".
Dear Zephead I have a great deal of respect for Crawford Little, both as an angler and writer, it therefore follows that I have found myself sharing the basis and conclusions to a number of his opinions. While I have not actually fished with him, I can not conceive that he is anything but a solid, intelligent, forward thinking & inventive salmon angler who has made a large contribution to salmon angling, there are not enough Mr Little's.

Having noted the last few contributor's remarks concerning my interpretation of the Zpey rod from my friend, I have looked at some Zpey info on the internet. While I have not used or seen one in real life, the pictures on the internet show pieces of metal connecting the reel section to shaped handle, perhaps that is what my friend thought was a spring? Also, a video I've just seen (zpey.no) specifically referred to a specifically designed flex in the handle, perhaps this is part of, or the cause of a feel of there being a spring. Perhaps a combination of these elements or a freedom from his back pain resulted in him being able to feel his cast to a degree not felt for years! No doubt we will find out soon.
