I have to say that I personally have found Alastair Gowans and his lovely wife to be very generous people. Great hosts, very friendly, helpful and honest people who couldn't do enough for us when we were in Scotland. They were more than helpful, above and beyond the call of duty in fact. He is a great caster and has a wealth of salmon angling and fly-casting experience which he has often freely shared.
As far as this expert business is concerned. Perhaps some are needed for a book. However in salmon angling it is no crime to not be as expert as someone else. Or to be a beginner, or slightly experienced or very experienced. Everyone is at their own stage in the learning curve and I'm sure enjoying the sport at their level. Perhaps because there is lifelong learning and a lifelong challenge then that is partly what makes the sport so attractive. One of the greatest musicians I have ever known has a saying which he sometimes tells to people who come to him for lessons, often they are feeling intimidated because of his great skill, which is - relax, I have nothing against beginners because I was once one myself.

I think we could do with a new book on salmon fishing like the one sugested to me opposite the Carron InterContinental by the departed, but not gone,IG over drams and Serrano ham.
A book about how to catch salmon in the 21st Century during faltering runs, death drought summers, horsing one day a year snow melt, before the lodge cook buggers off so you can still have 5 on the bank before dinner and have time for a warm bath before a G&T-now thats the sort of angling technique I'd like to learn about so when I decide to fish every hour God sends at least I'd stand a chance of a fish or two.
I think the need for coverage of Norewgian shootin' heeds, coneheads would be great to provide a technical update but for the precise reason I don't much like RPS reading list there is more to salmon fsihing than catching fish and that's why any book on salmon fishing I'd buy has to be more about vibe than technique for my hard earned theses days.
And as as for the new NASF book-the latest offering to the world of salmon fishing literature,I've asked for my copy to have the Tweed chapter written by someone who actually knows what they are talking about-otherwise my Bibliographique copy will be a special order with it the undoubted tosh from the author of that chapter removed by scalpel so as not to spoil the binding.
I'd prefer the views of The Factor any day for an account of Tweed fishing-at least there is a man who has consistently taken a hundred salmon to his own rod in UK waters every year on a number of consecutive seasons in recent years and didn't have to resort to the boatmen's arms on fat Lower Tweed beats to get them for him.
It is only a shame his unswerving modesty prevents him contributing to the SFF.

Silver Stoat, While the forum does have a Search facility, I have yet to discover the "filter" that will edit out the posts within a thread that have either hijacked the original piece or have one forum member calling another one an ar...ole or suchlike. I discovered this forum by Googling "Sage Zaxis review" and was shown to Clags piece, excellent I thought, however within a few posts some inverted snob had suggested that the haves buy an expensive rod so they can look down on those that have not .( or similar). I do not wish to mock, but unless you "search" accurately you are likely to end up reading a thread on "what car do you drive?" The excellent piece on the Kharlovka is a good example of the quality out there, This piece was then followed by countless, one-line posts saying "well done" or, "can I come with you?" ( I was guilty of this). Is the answer to this some judicial pruning by the administrators after a polite period of airing?? I too like books, I feel they are nice things to own and even to give, regards Robbie

Springer I am confused, My post was a response to Silver Stoat and others who suggest that this forum is as good as a book. I have simply pointed out why this idea may be compromised. Where have I asked for rules? I too have claimed responsibility for an offending "well done mate post". If your idea of going with the flow is not to criticize or disagree with the regular posters then I will withdraw from this forum immediately as life is too short and I am too old to enter bickering sessions from the security and anonimity of a computer. To quote Douglas Adams (He wrote Books) "So Long, and Thanks For All The Fish" .

I am only a "journalist" or "publisher" to the degree that I contribute to this website. In order to avoid argument, you can even work on the basis that Messrs Gowans & Frodin will have nothing to do with it.
I agree that a Wikipedia format would be an excellent vehicle for such a project but, the production of such a web site would probably mean the end of serious paper based books offering advice on salmon angling. Such isn't necessarily a bad thing. To a degree, casting, tying knots, fly tying, making spinners etc can only be properly shown via a video clip and therefore perhaps a computer version is the only real answer.
Setting aside the technical sections, such as explanations of tackle and equipment or biology and history, what sort of format do you think would be best? How about a picture of a "theoretical straight forward pool" with various features, an explanation of the likely holding spots and types of Atlantic salmon likely to be encountered, plan of attack, whys and wherefore's of tackle to be used, all key words hot linked to technical sections for further detail. Then there could be other examples of more complicated theoretical pools or parts of pools, set out in order to guide and advise the likely spots and methods to succeed.
Any suggestions on this format?

Springer, I have just briefly looked at two of the incidents that I chose to highlight in my posting, and to my absolute astonishment, I found that it was in fact you who called some one an ar....le and that it was you who said that the haves buy expensive things to show to the have not's. Perhaps this is why you were a bit sensitive and failed to grasp the purpose of my posts. Any way I apologise for potentially rocking your obviously, sensitive boat. Having read the archives extensively, this behaviour appears to happen far too often for me and strangely your handle appears in nearly everyone of them!this detracts from some of the otherwise excellent work from others. No doubt Springer, you will be pleased to know your "boat" will not be in danger of being rocked by me again as I am off, to join all the others that have "disappeared"so that every couple of months one of the "Thought Police" can ask "why is it only the same people who ever post threads?" and "why don't all the hundreds of lurkers out there get off their backsides" Somehow, I don't think you will ever realise Robbie

Dear Robbie I hope you give the forum a little longer. I heard about the site from someone who contributed a year or so ago who liked the concept but, who's gripe was that there were too many amateurs who thought they knew it all but, in fact knew next to nothing. While looking at the current postings I wouldn't go so far as to agree with him, surely it is up to those who know how to fish, to correct the situation. I can see what you mean about the abuse on this website, I think it stems from persons lacking the ability to present argument, also lacking the experience and knowledge of salmon fishing in order to contribute at any intelligent or constructive level. It is quite apparent why experienced anglers would refrain from using such a web site.

It is quite apparent why experienced anglers would refrain from using such a web site. Dear RPS In replying , I'm already breaking my self imposed promise not to respond to your posts as it clear to me that you are an agent provocateur whose purpose is primarly to get under the skin of and antagonise other forum members. In this respect you have clearly acheived your objective; well done. I am also glad that you wouldn't quite go so far as to agree with your experienced "friend" who came , saw and then dissapeared without having imparted his great knowledge to the uneducated masses who frequent the forum, but from your post you clearly have a great deal of sympathy with his point of view. I think if you took 5 minutes to look at some of the posts on the forum you would realise that amongst its members are some of the most experienced salmon anglers and ghillies in the UK. You complain on a number of occasions about abusive posts and lack of constructive and intelligent dialogue, yet frequently make sweeping, condescending & unsubstantiated statements about the forum and its membership which convinces me at least that you are not for real. I am fortunate to include several forum members amongst my fishing companions and I can assure you that forum members such as CLaG, Greenbanks, Colliedog, Dr Philgood,DonnieW, Zephead, Willie the Ghillie and Pertempledog are all salmon anglers of the highest calibre. Their experience is backed up by the catch returns from the weeks that they fish and I for one have learned much and will continue to learn from their tutelage. Although, I have not fished with them personally, a brief perusal from the posts of Jim the Fish, Springer, Munro Killer, Tyne Traveller, Paul Sewin, Minitube and Willie Gunn amongst others would again corroborate the fact that many of the UK's most experienced salmon anglers are posting on the forum on a regular basis. Perhaps, as was previously requested, you can share the knowledge gained from the beats that you fish or the experience gained from the companions that you fish with then we might start to believe a bit of your spin. Off course, we all know that this will never be forthcoming. Until then, to wade in suggesting that the forum members are a bunch of inexperienced, ill educated oiks needing educating from professionals like your "friend" is to me far more derisory and unedifying than any abuse that I have seen between forum members to date

Dear Splash Since you have chosen to misinterpret my remarks and take them out of context in order to arrive at a basis for your own opinions, it won't be a surprise to learn I hardly ever unnecessarily fish my fly where there is a high chance of snagging it and therefore unnecessarily disturb a lie.

Dear Springer If there are members of this web site who feel inferior because of their lack of knowledge or experience then I suggest they improve their reading and standard of angling. I would have thought that asking for serious comments of advice on the creation of a new salmon fishing "book" that would improve the knowledge of most anglers is a perfectly legitimate and sensible request. I note your remarks on this subject.

rpalmon, You are not doing very well to endear yourself to members "...may I suggest they improve their reading and standard of angling......." May I suggest that you change the tone of your postings, stop writing in a condecending/defensive way, and as if you are superior to everyone - my opinion but thats what it feels like. Nothing wrong with provoking debate in a postive way - ie more like your recent post re line weights but continue like this and your are only going to continue to get peoples backs up! I apologise to other members for my first few real posts coming across like this. I have read the many other spats/disagreements between long terms members and everyone seems to be able to get on again. I was just building up confidence to start engaging more in the posts but I felt I had to comment on this one as it has got me riled! .....phew....I'll go and hide in the corner now

Dear Juststartedagain In what way do you expect me to respond to comments that have nothing to do with the subject matter, contribute nothing to intelligent debate, and everything to do with the ego of anglers who are hell bent on argument and consistently refrain from sensible discussion on the relevant topic.
Surely the purpose of a discussion forum is to allow discussion, the subject title is clear, if people wish to discuss anything else then start a thread, if anyone has an ego problem then start a thread called "Ego". But anyone contributing to such should be aware that the rules of this site forbid much of the probable content of such.
