Hello fellow anglers and students of the secret lore. I'm new here but keen to get to know folks. I've been an angler for quite a few years now, from Chub to really big Dace so I feel I have something to offer. One question. I have been asked to a river next year, the Tay I believe, on a section known as Dal Guys. My question is as follows. Should I use my normal ground bait mix ( this is deadly stuff folks. Good for allsorts. Pike, Roach etc.) or maybe I should change it for a new place? Also boots. I've been told I'll need to wade a bit. Should I bring wellies? (Green of course.). I plan to bring my big Carp rod (its new as well). That should impress them no end. What do you think mateys?

Don't think you need our advice - you sound like a 'master of the baiting technique' to me

This year at a carp lake in England, a fisher feeding carp bits of dog biscuits turns and says to an Irish salmon angler, does it get any better than this?
Well, yes it does actually believe it or not.

Well that's a turnup for the books and no mistake. Sorry if I've ruffled a few feathers (not that theres not enough to go around eh lads?). Maybe it's as I didn't ask properly? I was hoping for some good advise on fishing something new for me and so that I didn't go looking stupid or anything like that. Can anybody help? I know that some folks dont go using Carp poles all over but maybe I thought it could comein handy in any case. Besides, with me baiter Im quids in I think?

Seriously, it wouldn't make for a memorable day on the Tay for you if you were to visit the beat - stick to the carp as youve no chance here. As far as looking stupid goes - straight 10's. GTF.

Well that's a rum do and no mistake. I can understand that theres them that wont have nowt to do with strangers. Maybe it's that eh? Thanks Springer (curious name, after the dog?) I'd be keen to know what kind of lures might come in handy. I've got some old plugs and things what Ive used for the pike. Some of them are very good too. Got a 2 pound 11 ouncer last year on me local canal. Brilliant it were. But they might be a bit big for up there I'm thinking? Also, how do you keep your bait from being washed away in the current. And Willie the Gillie, you might just learn a thing or two. I've been a fisher for manys the year now and had as few big uns. Got some good bait mixes I could share with you if your interested.

Groundbaiter,
What species do you intend to fish the Tay for?

No harm meant but the other remarks were quite hurtful and I see they are not moderated. I was made to feel very unwelcome and as for being called stupid! Oh well. Ill be fishing for anything that swims basically. Ive heard there are some good Perch there. Is this true? Also, a mate has just suggested that I take some Flying Sees. Are these good flies for fishing?

Groundbaiter,
There are plenty of waters that hold a decent number of Perch (they would live in a sweaty sock); the Tay would not figure highly as a Perch, or Carp venue. If you want to catch perch, I would search for a good coarse fishing forum. Mepps and small rapalas would be a better option than a flying C for Perch. The flying C is a spinner, but with a 15wt fly line and your carp rod, you may well be able to fish it like a fly. I would be very interested to hear how you get on with this method. I would advise that you do not try it with anybody else located within a 60yard radius from your own casting position. You may also wish to wear a crash helmet, eye protection, and maybe some body armour for your own protection. There is probably more information about salmon fishing contained in this forum, than on any other current on-line forum. You should take the time to scan all the information held in the previous threads. That way you will form a basic knowledge of the terminology and methods that are generally employed. Once you have got yourself up to speed, I'm sure you can phrase your questions in a manner that would encourage a more positive response from the members of this forum. I look forward to your positive contributions and sensible requests for information, after your, no doubt, lengthy period of silent study.

Dear me. More abuse. Fair comment is fair dos I allus say but where is the fairness here? I get moderated for saying Billy the Willy, a harmless thing with a bit of fun and yet others can abuse left, right and centre it seems. Keep your shirt on graaaaandaaaad. Thanks for your reply Freun. Ive had a quick look around but cant find anything to do with my latest question. My mate said that you have to throw all your fish back. Is this true? I throw a lot of mine back and to be true I do catch quite a lot. Had nearly 30 dace the other month and they all went back. Some of em were good uns an all. Any road, question is, can I put them in me keepnet until closing? You see I like to take a picture and weigh up me catch at the end of the day like. It's good to compare catches with me mates.

groundbaiter if you are truly genuine then fair enough but you come across as someone taking the p1ss, ie an ex member or an anti or maybe you are just not the sharpest hook in the box. Even form a coarse fishing point of view you your questions are too far off the mark to be taken seriously. As for "throwing" salmon back or putting them in a keep net this is a big no no and would never happen as most anglers have too much respect for the fish to treat them in this way. If you are truly genuine could you please give us some more info to work on such as when and where you intend to fish. I think that there must be better places to fish for coarse fish than the Tay which would be a very expensive way of catching coarse fish.

Groundbaiter,
We welcome new members on this forum, but as others have said, you are obviously at the wind-up. A bit of light hearted banter is fine with most of the members, and it can be very entertaining. However, the forum is in existence to discuss issues related to salmon fishing. If you have nothing relevant to contribute, I would appreciate it if you left the posting to those with a genuine interest in the topics being discussed.
If you wish to carry this conversation further, can we do it via the pm facility provided by the forum.
