The first salmon of the season on the River Moy was landed on Monday morning, 6 February. Local angler, Martin Conroy, who has also accounted for the first Moy salmon on a number of previous occasions, caught a beautiful 9 lbs. fish on worm at the “back of the boxes” in Ballina.

I have the tide tables for Sligo for 2006. Don't think there is much difference between tide times for Sligo and Ballina.

yes Ballina is just down the coast so it shouldn't be much different.
Do you have an 'email-able' version Redshrimp as it would come in handy?

First fish from the Ridge Pool and Cathedral
Salmon angling picked up well on the Moy this week with 81 recorded for the week bringing the season total, so far, to 197. The best fishing was on the Cloongee Fishery which recorded 14 for the week but virtually all fisheries produced salmon. Both the Ridge Pool and the Cathedral Beat produced their first salmon of the season with James Hiles, N. Ireland, landing the first (8.25 lbs.) on the Ridge Pool and Fred Thompson taking the first (9.25 lbs.) on the Cathedral Beat. On the Ballina Salmon Anglers water, Austin Devers had one for 11 lbs. on worm. The Knockmore, Attymas, Coolcronan, Armstrongs, Gannons and Foxford Fishery all produced salmon. Rinnany also fished well with a salmon of 15.75 lbs. recorded there. The NWRFB/Foxford Club water had a good week with the catch there including a fine salmon of 20.75 lbs. which was caught on prawn, at Carrageen, by Steve Thorpe, from the UK but now living in the Pontoon area. On Cloongee, the best salmon, weighing 13.75 lbs. was taken, on worm, by Swiss visitor, Arthur (Turi) Hilbert, who caught 6 on Cloongee for his week on the fishery, including one caught on bubble and fly. A fine salmon of 12.5 lbs. was also taken on Cloongee, by Mon. Le Beuze, France , on worm. The East Mayo water provided 6 for the week with the best, weighing 12.5 lbs., falling to Ronan Monaghan on worm.

Hi Ian, I fish the Moy ever summer and while I have not fished in the spring I can point you in some general directions. East Mayo is considered to be a good spring beat and in its upper part has some of the best fly water you could imagine. Seamus Boland runs Bolands bar in swinford is very knowledgeable about this beat. Two members on this forum should be able to help you. Themoygreen and Easky On the internet try www.rivermoy.com/ and www.northwestfisheries.ieI find the Irish most helpful so you should have no problems getting the information you need for a successful fly fishing trip. Cheers, Jock

There is also the Clongee Fishery downstream, its more expensive and while it has some nice fly pools it has a lot more slower water. If you have have some spare cash then I would suggest that you contact Robert Gillespie (fly tyer, guide, casting instructor). He will be able to guide you on the East Mayo stretch. He is very knowledgeable and a good guy to show you the ropes. If there is more than one of you then you can split the costs which makes it more affordable. Speak to Gary in the Ridge Pool Tackle Shop (in Ballina) for Robert's details. One thing to remember about the East Mayo stretch is that it is essentially a spate river that high up, so it needs water to bring the fish up and fish well . The spring run starts from mid April on so time wise you should hit it right . Hope this helps E

With one or two small exceptions the best fly water is East Mayo and above. East Mayo is a known spring water, however the best fly fishing is from July onwards, providing there is enough water to bring the salmon into the upper reaches.
Cheers,
Jock

Ian Jock is again spot on with his comments. If you are asking where fishes well with the fly over the season then Ballina is your probably you best bet. There is obviously the Ridge Pool but my preference is the Cathedral Beat - its cheaper and imo a nicer beat/water to fish (still not exactly cheap though ). It really fishes from July onwards depending on the water. August can be great in low water conditions as upriver goes very quiet when the water is low. With those beats you need to apply before the end of December for next year - have a look on the North West Fisheries web site for more info and application form. tight lines E
