First day to do any serious fishing on the river today.
Have had some casting tuition some days and fortunately we had the great American Spey caster Al Buhr visit Foxford for a day. On the Foxford Fishery he showed us some of his Spey casting techniques. it was really something special and Gerard Downey a.k.a. themoygreen also showed us and Al Buhr his magnificent distance casting technique. Al was very impressed. A great day was had by all.
Anyway I had a client for a Spey casting lesson today. He then wanted to fish so I guided a little. Forth stream he fished on the East Mayo water he hooked played and landed a nice fish around 8 lbs on a small hair wing fly he tied himself.

could be a bit early for the grilse David, as I'm sure you are aware they have been getting later and later. You could be inbetween the end of the springers and start of the grilse Still on the Moy you always have a chance of picking up a fish at any time

Ridge Pool produces its first Salmon of 2007
The first Moy Fishery salmon for the 2007 season was caught today 20 April by ghillie John Howley on the Ridge Pool. John was using a size 8 Ally’s cascade fished on an intermediate line. The fish was estimated to weigh approximately 11 lbs and was released immediately after being landed.
Half an hour later Gary Fullerton from Buncrana Co. Donegal caught the second salmon of the season on the Ridge Pool. He was also using a size 8 Allys Cascade. His fish was estimated to weigh about 6 lbs and was also released.

think John catches his fair share he usually catches the first from the Ridge ;D Was speaking to the Fishery Manager this morning and the levels up stream are now quite low, so best chance of a fish are the lower stretchs. Only light rain in Ballina today and they would need a lot more to make a difference at East Mayo etc

Well this is usually my first day fishing the Moy every year. this year I'm staying in Scotland. Looks like I've been lucky? for I would have been on the Ridge Pool on Monday!!! If I was there this coming week , in high water conditions, you would find me on the upper Moy, on the free water, pulling them in ;D, and on the fly if not too high. Don't go to Galway, stay on the Moy, the upper Moy.
