It was the same on the Isla (Tayside) three weeks late last year towards the end of June before they appeared in numbers.

think you have made the right decision, the town should still be very high, certainly for the fly. Head up to Donegal today's rain will suit the spate rivers

At last the main lower Moy is dropping down to fly height. Had five today with two guests on the Wall Pool, orange and gold shrimp no 10. Scierra fast sinking poly leader/MWF tip on a floating shooting head. Second day of five on the fly on the Wall pool this week for me, again orange and gold shrimp No8 and 10. Same set up.
Fish that would not be there if there had of been drift netting, grilse to 7 lb shaped like rugby balls, mostly fresh run and fighting like demons. Great sport on the Henrick Mortensen Mk2 13ft 8/9 Underhand casting rod.

Two days of bait fising on the Moy due to water rising and water height.
1st day Saturday, one of those days when things don't go right no matter what you do. Teaching a guest how to prawn. Had eight takes on float fished prawn on the lower Mount Falcon water to land only three. Lost a mighty fish after twenty minutes play and unfortunately never seen it, hook came out. Straightened the hook in another. Broke in another. Got three to 7lb. River rising all day.
Today the river was dropping and coloured. Same guest and his twelve year old son worming, this time on the Wall Pool. 12 fish landed, one lost and a few missed on the take. Largest 8.5lb. Guy on the other bank had three. All to float fished worm.
You would have enjoyed it paulsewin. Fresh fish.
Plenty of fish there, will be good when it gets back to fly height.

Back on the Moy again today, still high and coloured but clearing well. Worming down on Mount Falcon lower stretch with two guests, Cunninghams pool and the stumps. They landed five fresh fish, most sea liced and missed about eight. Fish were dropping teh bait in the morning, much better take on in the afternoon when the water cleared a little. Four Germans had eleven on worm just above us.
Will be another day or two at least for fly height on parts of the lower river. The bottom half of Mount Falcon water is well stocked with fresh fish.

Fishing on Wednesday to just after lunch had two on the fly and lost three during play with my two guests. That's grilse fishing. A Faughan Shrimp no10 up on upper East Mayo and Ballintemple water. Single handed rod.
Had to leave early and drive to the North then for my Father's 70th birthday party and meal at a local restaurant. Great to see him talking about salmon fishing after him finishing his second time round at chemotherapy to cure cancer. He had it about six years ago too. Worth the three hundred mile round trip just to be there for that meal with him. That's the thing about salmon fishing, it sure bridges any generation gaps and keeps a family very close. We've had some great days and great times salmon fishing together that I just couldn't put a value on.
No fishing today, casting tuition. Water is clearing and dropping nicely due to the fine weather. Should be good soon for fly and prawn/shrimp on the lower river.

Casting lesson for Deter Lynas on the Moy Estuary this morning, he had the Ridge pool booked and fished it to nine thirty. Not a sign of a fish, they're all upriver.
After the casting lesson we had lunch and I decided to see if I could get Dexter on the wall pool at Mount falcon for the afternoon. Luckily it was available and just getting to the right height for the fly.
Just left Dexter with three fish on the bank, one lost and one take missed. Fast sink poly leader, No 8 Faughan shrimp on a treble. Plenty of fish showing there.
I'm off to the Irish Game Fair now for the weekend. Lower Moy is coming right.

The lower river is finally low enough to fish with a floating line. Had two guests out on the Mount Falcon water yesterday and we caught seven fish. Four on bubble and fly (Faughan shrimp no 10), and three on the light line worm. Most reasonably fresh, one sea licer, all about 5 to 6 lb.Most on the Wall pool two on the ditches.
Wasn't out today.
