A nice start to someone's season. I seen a salmon was caught at Hoddom last February. From fishannan site: It is not long to go now before the beginning of the salmon season on the river, unfortunately these days we do not look forward to it with the same anticipation that we used to as Spring Salmon are now extremely rare and hardly worth fishing for. Having said that many anglers will be out with the big rod trying for one and normally there are one or two lucky ones that manage a fish. Remember that if you are that lucky angler that the fish must, by law, be returned and that the water bailiffs will accept no excuses for killing one (penalty is a fine of up to £5k). For most of us that consideration is not an issue but I for one am happy just to be out opening my shoulders with big rod and occasionally catching a kelt.

It's all internet booking now as far as I am aware. A lot of the old timers and locals are complaining because its harder to get on the beats they've fished for years. Hoddam is just thinking of the money. ££££££££££ Mike One thing doesn't change - D1cky the bailiff is still there. Hoddom is a lovely beat and is still good value, although it does get busy at peak times.

Yes Gary, Newbie it was. After the overnight rain, the river was clear but rising all morning until the influence of the Milk and Mein started showing at about lunchtime, it was all downhill then as far as the fishing prospects went. The river had risen by almost three feet by the end of the day, running a lovely "milky hot chocolate" colour. The 10lb er was caught at about 10.30, 200 yards downstream of the caul, a yellow and black devon did the deed as far as I could see. A beautiful fresh springer is a sight to behold and due to the C+R policy on the Annan till 1st June, one that will hopefully be more common in years to come. No luck for me but I'll try again in a couple of weeks.
Dan.

I agree and what make things seem worse is that there is no control over who fishes where at what time so some people just stay at what they perceive to be the best pools and hardly move.Last year i had someone just jump right in front of me as i was coming through Goats as if that wasn't bad enough he stood still and kept casting from the same place.I offered him some choice words as i got out the river to come in below him again but this sort of thing can become quite common on beats like Hoddom where there is no ghillie to speak of .Dickie is fantastic but he really only suggests to people where to fish. I have also heard people say that when the water is above the spinning mark they can let on even more than 15 rods i don't if this is true but it wouldn't surprise me.
Possibly a ghillie to spread out and control the rods would help

Possibly a ghillie to spread out and control the rods would help I'm with that, if spread out well over the whole beat, 15 rods would just about be the maximum for this part of the river. I would rather it was ten rods though, the beat split into two with a change-over at lunchtime. I've not experienced people jumping in halfway down a pool but I have noticed that when spinning is the order of the day, people seem reluctant to move from one spot all day. Is this normal when spinning or should the "take one step" rule still apply?

I've a chance of fishing Newbie on Saturday with Springer, the weather looks as though it will be against us aswell Nice to see a springer though(fish that is ). Regarding the cast and step rule, surely that applies to spinning aswell Gary

According to fishannan the river is at 3'3" and falling this morning from about 4'5" yesterday. The bbc weather site is forecasting light showers today, sunny intervals tomorrow and heavy showers on saturday. Mike knows the river better than me but if today's showers aren't too big I'd be tempted to go for a dip on Saturday. The ghillie will give you up to date details, PM me if you want his number.
Dan.

when i fished hoddom last year it was full with people not moving at all £45 a day i enjoyed although the river was up on the 2nd day they wouldn't even let us spin , in fact we couldn't get on the bank i know you pay year money and takes your chance but 15 rods is to Mitch , i phoned Dicky graham up yesterday to find out about a couple of days fishing over the next week or so and he hasn't got a clue who,s booked where , says its been taken out of his control and the only way to book is fish Anna he only finds out who's on the river that morning , thats no way to do business , don't think i will bother again its a long way for me , any ideas lads in the same price range billy p
