Robbie, I've looked at it seriously but couldn't justify the cost, seems to me to be astronomical for what you actually get. Ianjones, I don't know about self catering but the last time I stayed in the area I stayed in the "Corner House Hotel" in Annan. Decent enough accommodation for the price and has a bar , complete with gay barman . Nice restaurant over the road called (I think) "The Caspian". Never fished either of the beats you mention. Hope this helps, although I suspect not. Dan.

If not Mount Annan, how about Cleughead? and can anyone recommend some good accomodation near by preferably self catering? Many thanks.. You could try the Cressfield hotel in Ecclefechan, we're a nice bunch and the foods fab ;D Steeps

Planning a visit to the Annan at the end of oct / early nov.
The choice of beats seems to be between Brocklerigg, St Mungo's, Shilla Hill and Dryfeholm.
Can anyone offer any opinion on these beats?

I prefer St Mungos to Dryfeholm (which is fairly featureless).
Haven't fished the other two, but I recall people moaning last season that Brocklerigg suffered from people spinning off the other bank.

John, you have PM. Well, fished Newbie beat for a couple of days last week with salmondan senior, not much doing for the lazy anglers (like us) but the ones who get out of bed early apparently had the lion's share of the fish. I believe that 7 or 8 fish were caught for the week, most of them on the flying c , although the cascade accounted for a couple. River at 0' 3" .(The restrictions on spinning came off at the beginning of last week.) So no fuish for us but got to spend a nice couple of days away from work. The odd fish was showing up and down the river but with conditions more suited to the bahamas, the better option would have been to get the deckchairs and some cold beers. Better luck next year . Here's hoping for a bit of water in the Nith in a fortnight .

Also not much doing for the lazy anglers that go back to their hotels for a "rest" in the afternoons Caught you! came to find you to hurl abuse and rocks, but you were gone. Some guy in a polo shirt, black smart trousers and loafers told me, as he hurled a mepps across the pool

A guy in the car park (could have been the same chap, he was a "low water ironmonger" too) told me that someone had been looking for me but I missed you by 10 or 15 minutes apparently. I was up at the cauld trying to make them have a size 10 cascade.

I've never fished the Annan but will be going in early Nov. My strategy was to book beats where there wouldn't (or at least shouldn't) be too many rods rather than go to the better known ones and find the place busy. So far I've booked Dryfeholm, Shilla Hill and Upper Annandales and will have one more day, still to be decided.

Donnie i would try the lower river. the mid river can be sluggish but there is fly water. lower river clughead, hoddom or st mungos. will be good bets. enjoy.

Perhaps it would be worth the forum commenting on this picture, which i find rather upsetting. www.castandcatch.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15991Perhaps coloured isnt the word. Unbelievable Hoppy Link reinstated by Springer due to initial misunderstanding.
