Sewin Hows the Wye fairing these days for springers, any come back from the 90s? Its been dire in terms of numbers for a few seasons being below the 1,000 fish per year mark every season from 1997 to 2004 and early results indicate that the 2005 catch is down on the 850ish of 2004. The run is still pretty much Spring/Early Summer based as its still the only English or Welsh river or any significance where most of the fish are caught before July rather than the late season dash we see on most of the rivers these days. If there is any good news it is that quite a few big 20s and a few low to mid 30s are being caught most seasons so the big 3 & 4sw fish are still around but in small numbers. We can but hope that what ever the Wye's particular malaise is is sorted and it can return to its considerable former glory. I can remember when a 20lber was hardly worth mentioning and I saw a rod get 5 fish over 20lbs before lunch on Easter Monday in the 1970s. In those days any two of the better beats would have a combined catch better than the 120 miles of main river plus tributaries these days. The biggest Wye fish that I personally saw on the bank was 51lbs 8oz and I saw one bigger fish in the water in the 1980s.

Hows the Wye fairing these days for springers, any come back from the 90s? Just had the 'end of term report' from the lower Wye beat I occasionally fish. Although there is a long way to go, there are some encouraging signs, and it should not be forgotten that in the 1890's the runs of Wye salmon was possibly in an even worse state than now, and that they recovered from that low ebb. Here are some extracts from the report: "The early part of the season was most promising. Although we saw little of them, an improved run compared with recent years of large springers passed upriver. Nothing to get excited about but a good trend nevertheless and they gave some sport to the beats around Hereford which had been very poor in recent years. This was followed by good numbers of 2SW fish...the average size was in the high teens. The apparent good runs of May and June were confirmed by the counter which has shown the best tally for many years. Stocks of fry and parr in the head waters have continued to improve...Some of these were devoid of life due to acid rain and the addition of limestone has had quite a dramatic effect with many now supporting both trout and juvenile salmon. Spillage of sheep dip continues to be a serious problem...though farmers are becoming more aware of the consequences. The Irish drift nets continue to take more than their share of Wye and other European salmon...I am sure that the days of this fishery are numbered which could have a considerable effect on the Wye. Taking everything into consideration, there is every reason to be optimistic about the future...Many of the faults which existed in the old days have been remedied and the portents are good." Returning to topic, I had 2 x 28lb fish from the Vosso in Norway - one on shrimp and one on prawn

not broken the big 2 - 0 yet, but i did have a 19 pounder this year from the Rynda, on the northern kola. I was on the specially discounted youth program which was a serious experience of a lifetime. was pretty distraught when i lost a fish that seemed to be in another league the following morning with the same fly, identical cast into the same lie. c'est la vie! best UK fish was on upper Tweed and measured 36" - both were on Willie Gunns!

Biggest 24-25lb cock fish that we returned on the Tweed 2003. on a Willie Gunn.
Best 12lb hen also on the Tweed super fresh caught in high water against everyones advice. I planned the catching of this fish through learning the water and thinking were the fish might lie. Caught on a 2" gold body williw gunn.
I love it when a plan comes together!!

It was yes Dave. One of the best fights i've had off a salmon. Probably landed it 200yards below where i hooked it, and it was one of the few times ive seen my backing.

My Pb is 28lbs which was set in Aug 2005 on the Rynda in Russia, the fish had been in the river for some time but gave a very good account of its self with a very dogged fight. For 90% of the fight the fish just sat in fast water above me hardly moving with my rod doubled over unable to apply any more pressure for fear of pulling the hook / breaking rod (which wasn't mine as BA had lost mine on route) the fish then woke up and shot 100m downstream past 100's of big rocks in fast water and just as i got level with it it tried to go back upstream before i turned it and 2 Min's later it was in the net. Great memories but would swap it for a sea liced 25 lb fish.
