38inches, twenty something? flying C, May '05 Dorset chalkstraem. On the fly about 12lb on an orange templedog from the Halladale, May '05 (it was a good month!)
But the one I will always remember is the first one I ever saw. It was in the last week of the 1988 season on the Dywfach in Wales. It was probably only about 8lb but it was bigger than anything I'd ever hooked. It just kept heading and tailing in the middle of a small pool. It ignored everything I threw at it but it just made me more determined to get one. It took another four years!

Where are all the big fish when I'm about I don't think I've even lost a truly "big" fish. How's that for honesty. Anyway sometimes small is best- my first, a 3lb grilse from the Awe or my first Tweed salmon- a mighty 4lber!! Beat that!

Best was the first.
Boat Pool on the Crathie beat of the Dee in June a few years ago.
I can still see the line as it swings round, then starts to tighten and chug away..........
Only about 8lbs but I had to wait a hell of a time for it. Ive had bigger ones since but none as memorable as the first.

Size wise, 37.5 inch cock fish from the River Leven in October 2004. Lost one far bigger last October.
This was not the nicest or most pleasurable fish to catch. The best fight was a 14 pound fish from the Tay last summer, it took the most backing that a fish has ever taken from me.
Some of the prettiest fish I've caught have been tide fresh early summer grilse from spate rivers.
Still to break my duck as far as a springer goes. Unless the first week in June counts!!! I'll get one earlier this year.

Most memorable fish was my first ever,I'd seen a good fish show in a pool on the Ericht one March day whilst trout fishing, I had only spinning stuff in those far off days which I used for pike fishing in winter, spinners I had collected off the river bed during trouting trips. I went down to the pool next morning tied on a silver Toby and on the second cast I was into something heavy which turned out to be a 16lb sea liced stoater ! Almost gave up on trout after that !

13 Lb., taken on a size 14 single Munro's Killer when Seatrout fishing on the Dyfi.
One of the prettiest was the birthday present the river gave me, a beautiful bright silver 4Lb. grilse, last October when I had popped down to the river for an hour.
