This year I hope to be out more regularly on the Dart, Teign and Exe. I will break my Devon duck!
What the hell! I'll even go after the non existant springers!

Rob, I note from a post on the big forum that you be an incomer to these parts (a bloody scouser no less!). How long have you been trying to break your 'Devon duck'? Certainly the last five seasons, with the exception of 2004, have been a bit of a disaster most of the Westcountry. Having said that, again with the exception of '04, I have caught more springers than grilse in the last five years. Last season there were definitely more springers and good summer salmon in the Exe system but no water to get them upstream in season. At spawning time there were some excellent fish up on the moor and all in good nick with hardly any disease. For springers don't forget the river Lyn. If we get rain around the second set of spring tides in April or early May there are always a few fish about. Nobody fishes at this time of year so you stand half a chance with the fly. Not like after June 16th when it's shoulder to shoulder wormers Tight lines Andy

I arrived at the height of the 2003 drought, was drowned out in 2004 (didn't fish much either) and more drought last year.
My springer comment was tongue in cheek, and I think your point about the grilse is valid. I'm going to fish the Exe more seriously in April and May and then hang up my boots until September!
East Lyn is just a bit too far afield for me in Torquay.
Andy, your name suggests an affiliation with the Exe, where do you fish? I've taken a rod in the Stoke Canon area last two years.

I've fished Stoke Cannon a couple of times last season as a guest and blanked. I didn't really enjoy it, I was fishing weekends and the top of the beat was full of swimming dogs That said friends did pick up a couple of fish there last year. Apparently the most productive pool in the past was the long one in the wood, fished with a shrimp! Don't be in too much of a hurry to pack up after May, if we get a 'normal' wet year there should be grilse all over. Up 'til 2000 it was usual to get fresh fish right up onto Exmoor in July but it's just been too dry recently. Where do I fish? above Dulverton is all I will say. You're welcome to come and try if you're ever flooded off again. Tight lines Andy

The best pool is right at the bottom of the beat- "bridge pool". Certainly holds fish, just no takers when I'm around The top end is where all the dog walkers are. Believe me they are even out at 7am!

My only experience of these beats was my first and last trip in a canoe, I was more interested in not drowning than the fishing possibilities!

Latest weather from Exmoor is snow showers but they are clearing. Hopefully the road up there will be clear in the morning. I would expect exerod to be up on the moor picking 'wild flowers' rather than wetting a line on opening day!!!!!!

The Taw on opening day was in fine fettle. Fished from 1030 till 4pm through the most likely spots, saw or felt nothing. With the snow showers persisting hopefully the current level will hold till the weekend.

My season starts tomorrow with a weekend on a middle Exe beat. Still a bit chilly down here for March (I know it's all relative!) but looking forward to getting out. Any tips for an early Exe springer?

Fine order, but fishless. The Exe at Bolham yesterday. Nice to cast away a few cobwebs though, and good to meet up with Andy Exerod.

No salmon showing, no kelts either. Andy caught a grayling- on a 2" temple dog tube.

I always use to think Grayling were hard to catch round my area on small flies. Seems Ive been doing it all wrong. I have caught lots of Grayling up to 3lbs on Sea Trout and Salmon flies though !!

I've never caught a grayling whilst salmon fishing, but at this time of year (for us down south at least) any bend in the rod is welcome.

Fished the Taw yesterday on colouring water, saw nothing.
One of the other rods had had two the previous day in a 15 minute period, I think they were 17lb and 10lb...
Oh well, there's always next time....
