OK Andy, a fresh start. Lets keep this one jinx free!
So the Okement is worth a pop then?

Yes if it rains! It can pick up a lot of red soil (much redder than the Exe) but clears out quickly as the head waters are true moorland rivers. As I said the upper beat is probably better (cant remember what its called) but there is a holiday cottage on the farm and I think in summer you would be just as likely to catch swimming holiday makers. Fish it when it is raining!

Looked very fishy at Shilstone the one and only time I fished it. Memorable for me because I broke three ribs when I fell off a steep bank. This must have disturbed all the fish also.....

Reckon I'll give it a go sometime soon. Taking care of the steep bank!

I think you should go as soon as possible while there is still water. By the end of May, along with every river west of Weymouth, it will be down to a tepid trickle The Taw and Torridge might struggle with high water on opening day. I spent the weekend walking on Exmoor and the ground is utterly sodden. The main Exe was very coloured although the upper reaches were clear but it is much too early for anything up there. Andy

Only one problem Andy, the angling 2000 booklet is not published for a few weeks yet and I have no idea where to find the Okement beat. Can you help?
Otherwise I'll probably try the main Taw or Torridge beats. I have March 5th ear marked, weather permitting. We have yet another week of rain ahead of us.
Andy, where you bank clearing last weekend?

I am going to take Exerod at his word and I can confirm that I am going salmon fishing tomorrow come hell or high water.
Judging by the rain radar it will be the latter, so I anticipate diverting from the Taw catchment to the Lyn catchment, and possibly arriving home early....
:oNothing ventured, nothing gained.

Let us know how you get on. My first trip out has been postponed by a few days. We'll probably be into drought by then. ;D

I ended up on the Lyn, and managed a kelt of about 4lb. It could not be described as well-mended, and had a bite out of its tail missing.
Nothing else seen and nobody else around. They will all be kicking themselves when the drought kicks in.............
Still hoping to try in the Taw catchment tomorrow, need to check on water etc first.

The kelt was in the tail of Crook Pool, this picture was of the river below Watersmeet... Not sure on the Torridge, but my guess would be very coloured

Managed to fish the Mole today, 0.9 on the gauge (which didn't visibly drop during the day), 46F water temp and a pleasant 'spring' morning. The greenish hue was there, but the water was not too coloured at all. It was fairly heavy going, definitely spinnable only, and I didn't see a fish, but it was good to get out. It was raining when I left....

Buster,
Interesting that you should mention Long Pool, have you ever found fresh fish that far up this early?

Hi Andy, I have never fished it this early, I usually wait until May / June, I presume from your response that they don't get this high!
