Whilst grayling fishing at weekend with two pals , we must have seen at least 20 salmon at Llangollen ,oblivious to all but their spawning activities. Great to see & augers well for coming seasons

I have just joined Corwen and District AC this year so here's hoping one of those eggs will turn into a gullible fish for me in a few years time!

Had a pleasant couple of hours on the Dee on Sunday afternoon - warmish sunshine with snow on the banks.
Had an interesting walk down a steep hill to the beat. The snow kept sticking to the felt soles on my wading boots, it was like walking in some platform heels from the 70's!
Had a solid take after an hour - estimated it to be a 15lb boulder on the river bed, but it felt good after a long winter. ;D
No sign of fish, but rumour has it that a few springers have been in the fish trap at Chester.

Elwyman do the EA still use the trap at chester to monitor fish? or is there a counter on it ? I am only asking as the EA is monitoring a fish trap on my local river for the 2nd spring running where they will weigh, measure and take scale readings of fish.

There was a report on one of the other forums that an estimated 18lb springer was lost at the net last week.
A few kelts have been caught.

Fished Bryn y Pys beat 2 for a couple of hours - that's the beat below the weir, just above the Cross Foxes pub.
Water was 850 on the gauge - on the high side but water clarity was v good. No pulls or fish seen, but it was nice to be out.
Haven't heard of any fish being caught yet?

Glad you discuss fishing the Dee on this forum, sick of trawling through mindless chat between mates on other forums re fishing the Dee. I have access to fishing on the Dee in the Llandderfel area, does anyone know when the salmon arrive that far up the river?

The first fish at Corwen is usually around mid-June, Llandderfel wouldn't be much later than that.

Heard in Foxons that some salmon had been caught in the Bryn y Pys area over the last week or so.

The latest view from the "pundits" is that, given the movement of fish through the trap and reports from downriver, the first fish from the Corwen area may come in the next week or so.

I heard last year, that one lucky chap had 5 fish in a morning from a private beat at Carrog, at the end of May.

I happen to be in the vicinity of the Dee on Monday, possibly for a day or two. Its a while since I have fished it so I have lost track of what the gauge readings mean. It is currently on 1105 and dropping......... I suppose I'm asking if might be worth wetting a fly in that time period..??

The Dee has been 2ft up and they say the best river level for the fly is between 520 and 750.

Thought I'd try the Dee at Corwen as both the Conwy & Elwy are showing their bones. The Dee gauge was at 540 - it had risen about 6" after thunderstorms earlier in the week.
Started off salmon fishing and caught my first of the season - an 11lb cock fish on a size 14 Blue Charm, from the Bench Pool at Rhaggat. ;D
Gave the sea trout an hour after dark - no pulls and no sign of any fish. I haven't really fished the Dee much for sea trout, because I have never seen a sea trout in it!

Thanks Andy.
Since learnt it was a dam release that raised the river level. Dams are a mixed blessing on salmon rivers, but I suppose they do help in a drought.
Went to see family in Newcastle for the weekend - the Tyne looks painfully low.

Well done Elwyman - and who says dams don't have their uses. Severn is more like a turkish bath than a salmon river at the moment. Tom
