Had a go with the Monteith multi-tip line at the weekend and was very impressed. Tight loops and great turnover even with the heaviest tips /copper tube on.
Anybody know where I can buy one ?
cheers,
Tom

Tom,
Ebay or Jock Montieth at Newtyle. However, far more local, Gordon Pollock on the Leven could sort you out - he ghillies part time on Newtyle.

Following all the great praise for this line and guessing that there might be a queue in the line pool, I took the plunge and bought one. Tried it out on the Tweed last week and was particularly impressed with its performance with the 25' head (15+10 tips). The 15' tips were also easy to cast, but I had some difficulty in loading my 15' Bloke 10/11 (5 piece) when using the 10' tip. Since I had previously been using a Windcutter 9/10/11 or a DT11 with this rod it was probably a matter of needing to alter my technique, however, with the 63' head it felt a lot lighter than the Rio. Has anyone else tried this line with a Bloke?

Thanks for the quick replies. Springer, I did what it said on the box and slid the black mark up to the point where it lodged tightly on the rear of the body, but without trying to force it any further. Graham, I was also very happy with the 15' tip, however, I think I may have been trying to be too gentle with the 10' one and should have done the opposite. If the Tweed is still as low next Thursday I shall have a whole day in which to concentrate in experimenting!

Sorry Springer, I was being thicker than the line! I must admit that I havn't yet devoted enough time on the 10' tip, having spent too much enjoying myself with the other two. In addition to using the marker I did try fishing it 3-4 feet outside the rod tip but, since it was a short head, I did not try any casts with it inside the tip.

I have been using the Monteith all season. I have used all the combinations and have found it really versatile.
I started off using the ex fast tip with big collies, templdogs and copper tubes. It turned them over with ease-even in a gale (need to adjust the casting a touch).
As the water has warmed I have been using the 15' int. tip and reckon it will do a lot of business for me.

Sringer, Thanks but I'm going back to work tomorrow for a fortnight so it would be difficult for me to get to try it as I work away from home. As I was after a new line and couldnt make up my mind and after hearing some good reports up at Kercock at the weekend , I just wondered what anyone else that had tried it thought. Since my last post I have been on ebay and purchased one so look forward to trying it out.

Thanks for the advice re marker position Springer. I found that both the 15+10 and the 15 on its own both worked fine with the inner end of the marker just touching the rod tip, but that was with floating tips and a light fly. Obviously I will need to experiment with other combinations. It was only when trying the 10' tip alone that I had trouble in loading the rod properly. However, since I doubt if I shall have much need of the short tip alone, certainly with this rod, this is not a problem. Doubtless Willie Gunn would say I had developed bad Windcutter habits!

Im going to swap the marker for pen, as like springer I dont like it clattering the rings. It is my only criticism of the set up though. IME the marker only needs to come in a bit further to make the sinking tips work with a big fly- I cant say how far, but play around with it. Greenbanks got a nice 21lb dee springer using the 15'fast with 10' ex fast tips- so if he can do it must be a doddle. Try a shorter and faster back stroke to load the rod when you are using the 10'tip. I had the same problem- I am certain it is caused by using different head lengths. With variable head lengths, you need to keep readjusting your casting stroke.

The casting marker is a nasty thing. I slid mine up the running line just to mark the line with marker pen at the point where the sleeve stopped, and I couldn't get the bloody thing back down. I had to cut it off with fine tipped scissors, which took ages

tynetraveller The vast majority of anglers love the head marker feature (and the experts from T & S in a prototype review 2 years ago). The 2 main reasons for it more than any other factor is that it is visible in poor light conditions (bright or low) and even if your totally blinded by sunlight you'll feel it when it touches the tip ring. And obviously exact and precise line lift duplication between casts. Sorry to hear it jammed when you slid it up the running line but thats exactly what its meant to do (without glue). It looks long when its on the line but at the end of a 15ft rod pointing away from you its doesn't appear so long. Also the position the marker will self-lock into place is around 5/6ft into the 12ft rear taper. What I mean by this is if your drawing the black marker well back into the rod rings between casts especially on the 63ft or 68ft head lengths for normal river casting your losing the full weight of the head for casting. The line fishes best even on the longer 78ft head (D loop space available) when the black marker sits outside the tip ring or on it (rod & caster ability permitting). It was never intended to be drawn well down into the rod rings when casting then shot back up through them again although it will. Have you damaged your mainline with your scissors - I am cringing about you taking a marker pen & scissors to this brand new line. There's more thought gone into this head marker and where it's positioned than people are realising. All features of this line have been thoroughly thought out. Did you have a cast with the line today upon arrival ? If youve damaged your mainline with your scissors post it back to me and I'll replace it. Regards Jock 07968 145033
