Hi Madkeen
May would be a brilliant time to be on the Spey at Grantown - probably the best time of all..
I dont think you can book tickets in advance (though I would try to if you want a week ticket on the Castle Grant Water). Mortimers will need to know you are staying in local accomodation (parish of Grantown) but apart from that you should be OK.
If you are there on Friday 18th, I'll be the one wearing the silly grin sitting on the bench overlooking the cemetary pool - grinning madly whether I have caught or not! (probably not)

Hi Guy's A few fish starting to show up at Grantown and above now, the town water at Grantown had four on Saturday, Abernethy had one and Aviemote had a nice 15lber. Gordon.

What's the Abernethy water like? Seems to do quite well, is it fly water? Obviously a good spot for sea trout.

JJ I've booked a weeks holiday in mid June and I'm going up for the week. I can't wait either. I've never strayed far from my home rivers the Dee and the Don but I'm looking forward to having a go for the Sea Trout on the Grantown water. Have you fished it at night for the Sea Trout?

Hi Guy's The best sea-trout fishing on the Spey is at Abernethy (Boat of Garten), i think the numbers for last year was recorded at around 800, i looked after the water there for 12yrs and fished for sea-trout on the odd night. ;D One thing i have noticed is the Sea-trout are running abit later than they used to, even though we had a couple of Sea-trout this week . Tickets can be bought at the post office for a day or week as the tackle store has closed, the advantage it has over Grantown is the number of people fishing and the day ticket is 24hr so you can fish through the night on one day ticket, a hell of a saving as you only need one day ticket not two. Gordon.

Drive!
Folks live in Cheshire so we stop overnight there. If I was travelling alone I would fly up and hire a car. Anyway, I get more tackle in the car. ;D

I am going up the first week in May as well. Flying from Bristol to Inverness is very cheap.

Not if you need 5 seats. ;D Anyway, I'm sure my carbon footprint will be smaller.

Things seem a bit slow according to the Grantown website. All fish falling to the spinner. Does this reflect the conditions or those fishing at present.

I think it reflects the very slow start to the season all down the east coast. I'm getting worried - is this poor start to the season an indication of the terrible drought/heat-wave of summer 2003?

Grantown permits are available from Mortimers (fishing shop) although you have to prove you're staying in the locality.

Quick query - how light will it be of an evening in early May?
I'm just trying to manage my own expectations in respect of fishing for sea trout in the dark, half light or blinding daylight at 10pm etc...

Jon,
Sunset on the 1st of May is 20.56 approx and on 15th May it is 21.23 approx. Therefore at 22.00 you will be in the fading light. If it is around the 1st you will be finding it difficult to see your flyline. Around the 15th you will still think it is daytime and you have about another hour of good light left.
But we all know the sun never goes down on Speyside.
Colin.
