Joined SAC this year and fished Muirton quite a lot the last few months of the season i would say it does have good fly water the river is wide and strong 18ft rods and shooting heads are the norm.It can be quite busy but the locals are a helpful bunch .i was like you and a bit sceptical but it is great value with a good chance of fish search the forum there is a post about this somewhere Rennies your man too keep you right. ;D

Hail salmonscotty16lb,in short go for it its damn good fishing for the price.Fished the Muirton bank for years and have now graduated to the (opposite) Rome Croy bank. Right the beat is at technically the head of the tide bellow Almond Mouth and fish can expect to be caught from July onwards the fishing getting better as the seasons end approaches although some fish do crop up earlier on to stalwarts. The best pools are fly only regardless of water height so techniques have been modified over the years to suit.In normal to high water the beat is best fished with a big up to 18ft rod and shooting heads in sinking rates to suit the conditions with tube flys up to 2",in low water plenty of fish are caught using conventional tackle15/16ft rod floater+poly-tip and dressed treble. The thing nowadays is plenty of powerful big rods are available but getting the sinking lines to make them work is the problem, new members are leaning to wards 16ft rods and 11# lines, you will need lines like a wet2,some thing at 5"ips and a HiD and maybe a Deep Water express for really high water. This water was the proving ground for the Allys Shrimp and Cascade and the man himself frequently swims a fly through here. The quality of fish caught here is first class usually chrome bright and sea liced and although the beats don't fish as well as they used to they have produced some very large fly caught fish and excellent numbers of fish too. Like the rest of Scotland the fishing isn't what it was but believe me no other club can give you fishing in this class.Only down side is if the fishing is good it gets busy and you will have to Que for the best pools also if the water is high the Muirton looses some of its best pools but gains more water if you like to spin. A few other forum members have joined and are well into the "Grainhead" learning curve,so join us take the plunge, just shout up if you need to know more or want to know any of the crack I and any of the others will be only too pleased to help.Good luck and tight lines, Pedro. P.S. once you have experienced the "Grainhead" shuffle theres no going back.

Grainhead shuffle, usually experienced getting down into the tail of the Grainhead maybe 1ft 6" to 2ft of water a quick sinking shooting head and brass tube those lovely round tennis ball sized stones(only slightly slippery) and a nice chrome bright teenager disputing ownership of your tube and heading off to Dundee to show its mates what its just found.Abstinence from curry and a shed load of ale the night before can prove advantageous here! ;D Pedro.

not a word back on this front guys is it time to look for another piece of ac water or hold tight? was also told there is chance of getting offered a ticket for the almond? I wouldn't give up hope yet. They usually take a while to sort out the stragglers from last years membership. Best thing would be to phone the Secretary, Shirley Wood at the Estate Office on 01738 552588 to check. She is only in the office early mornings so phone before 10.30am. If you are unsuccessful, consider a ticket for Willow Gate. The fishing is in the centre of Perth opposite the Town Water but at £30pa you cant go wrong and it puts you on the first rung of the ladder towards a ticket at Rome Croy. At one time, seventies and early eighties, a ticket on Willow Gate was to die for but the fish dont seem to hold there in numbers any more. Having said that all Tay fish have to go through it and last year (2005) I took a Willowgate permit for old times sake in addition to my Rome Croy permit.I fished it once one day in mid Sept. Rome Croy was busy and the fishing was slow so I stopped in Perth at Willowgate on the way home at 4pm. I had a sealicer on the bank by 4.30pm from Stanners Island on a 5'polytip and a size 9 Flamethrower ! No one else fishing. The water is tidal down there so obviously you have to work round the tides.

Scotty I think the almond fishes more at that backend and is dependent on rain.Spey casting is fine when its low but on muirton when the river is up you cant wade so then its overhead casts that are required. There is a tree line behind you as well so thats when the 18fters and 18yds shooting heads come into there own.I fished it last year with my standard 16ft rod and it was perfect up until the river rose and it was a bank shot.If you only have a 15ft rod then have a think about the guideline shooting heads they are very good.Get yourself some early trips to familarise with the water for when the fish start to build up.Cascades and the like when the waters low when its up tubes are used with sinking line (type 4 a versatile line).A lot of boys use plastic tubes black +orange/black+yellow.Its a steep learning curve here and my head was burst a few nights trying to cram all this info in ;D.Will probably bump into around july time tight lines. I was wondering if anyone has been fishing here and what sort of results they have had. I have been up once about 3 weeks ago and landed a sea trout but never saw a salmon. Anyone had any luck

I have made about a dozen trips this year (Saturdays) to Muirtons and have seen very few fish. Just getting to know the beat in my first season. I have met quite a few locals walking the beat and most of them tell me it is a bit early yet. I was the only one fishing the whole beat whilst the game fair was on at the palace on the Saturday. It is good value for money and I am looking forward to the crowd scenes at the back end! I have asked to go on the Rome Croy waiting list and have found it interesting to hear some stories about the relationship between the 2 banks. Mike

Fished last friday when the water was fairly big and coloured . Couple of rods were ther but didnt bother fishing. Thought i would give it a run down the grainhead. The second cast was a sea trout around a pound and 5 minutes later i hooked into a half decent fish which promptly took off downstream . I lost it after 20 seconds of solid head thumping!..Dont know whether it was a salmon or good sea trout but there was a bit of weight to it. I then fished the next morning about 5.30am for a couple of hours. I got a fantastic take down the back of the island but when i lifted ...Nothing there! Was gutted as the water was still dirty and i didnt think i would get to many chances which turned out to be true!...There are fish going through and if i think if you put on there noses they will take it. Incidently i was using s2/s3 guideline sinker and a really bright orange templedog style tube.

Was out on friday evening for a few hours a couple of other fishers out nothing seen or felt.Good casting practice though tried various shooting heads on the big rod the guideline 11/12 required about 12ft overhang to get the best out of them, then tried some dt 12 cut around the 22yds mark these the big rod really liked.
