Back in the big time today, eleven fish caught and a sea trout, ranging from,one.............yes one pound in weight to seventeen pounds and a high percentage of fresh ones... BUT... Two one pounders this week! both returned.. The cormorants will make short work of them in the winter thats for sure..

Very worrying this skinny fish syndrome must be a real lack of something at sea..
We must hope that this is a one off season for them & not something that is to become the norm.
Have any reasons been put forward for these fish being so thin or is it just being out down to bad feeding conditions ?

I have heard reports that some of the lean fish have liver fluke.
Whether this is isolated or the main cause to the problem is still to be assessed.

My opinion based on a friend catching one of these fish was that it was 'ill' rather than short of food.
The fish in question was bleeding from the vent fairy heavily which would also indicate some illness - perhaps fluke as Gordon mentions.
Surely someone has sent some of these fish off to fisheries laborotories to be tested???

The Association of District Fishery Boards have organised various rivers to partake in a scale sample exercise. This takes in the Lower Spey and others and we on the Deveron have also been asked to take part( if we can keep them on the hook)
Scales should be taken from just below the dorsal fin and put in a PAPER envelope and sent stating river. length and/or weight of fish to
Simon McKelvie Conon Fishery Board Aultgowrie Farm House Aultgowrie Muir of Ord Rossshire IV6 7XA.
Envelopes are available from the fishery research station at Montrose if required.

I know for sure that pal Jim Tritton up at Kinnaird near Pitlochry has kept sample live" Twiggys" which have been collected for examination. The crack seems to be what Gordon has said about the Liver Fluke. It is doubtlessly more prevelent this year than ever before. Frank, I got the hooks, many thanks.

I have just been reading some info that says the scale samples are to investigate the small grilse rather than the thin grilse.
Dennis - good to here that some are being examined.

None of these skinny ones last week .and none of them today, thank goodness. The grilse of late have been much better qualityand some bigger fish around too. A lot more activity in the morning than afternoon today but it was very bright in the afternoon pretty well shining straight down the beat as usual. biggest today was nineteen pounds,it had been to Bermuda going by the suntan it had caught on a PINK flying C.but safely returned. Five more fishing days to go until it all ends for another season, but what a season this one has been on Kercock.

We passed the 400 fish milestone today, the first time it has been done in many a long year, this is in fact a combined total between Upper and Lower Kercock which is now owned by one owner. You may ask how many did the ghillies catch ? total = 2. I just hope that the 400 milestone does'nt become a millstone from the new owner of six weeks. We all know how fickle the salmon can be !

Dennis,
Well done.
I heard that you had a new employer a few weeks ago, but didn't know if it was public knowledge yet.

Well done Dennis,I've been only too happy to contribute towards this total. i.e. nuthin'-zero-nil-sweet F all. I've thoroughly enjoyed my days at Kercock though and am supremely confident that come Saturday that total will be enhanced even more.
Cheers

Thanks lads, the final countdown is 415 for the season. I'd been really chuffed with 300 before the season started now that we have the two beats, but I never have targets in fish numbers. I remember the late Lord Perth saying to me as I was bemoaning the fact that on Lower Kercock we had less than 100 fish, he said,it is not about numbers,it is about enjoyment, when guests are happy, the return, those who want numbers I really don't want them on the beat,be happy with the fact that your guests return and more every year. This has been a great year lots of new faces, some superb craic, good friends made and fellow members met,we certainly had a chuckle or two. The last day was really something else one guest had two nice fish and a SANDAL ! did he ever get the pi** ripped out of him .....Kercock Sole etc etc Yes, it's been a good one.

I'm going fishing on Monday ! to the Powmouth beat on the south Esk. Busmans holiday. Its a very short beat, perhaps I will catch it "right" this time,I've been several times in the past few years. My pal Jim can ,I hope help me out with fly sizes I'm sure. However if there is anyone out there who has been on a successful session at Powmouth, helpful hints would be appreciated. Been invited to a beat at the bottom end of the Teith on Wednesday, I think its syndicated but not sure, entry through Bridge of Allan I think.. I will go and rake out the gear for it now, then pop down to Kercock to check if the river is still there ! Thanks for the support lads, much appreciated.

Cheers Iain,There is always a chance of a fish on some of those later rivers on your side of the country.... Lost one today at Powmouth on a size 8 Tummel shrimp. The severe shaking of the head and near surface action said Lip hooked, waved it cheerio before it went, bright fish too but that was it for the day.. Ah well, better luck on Wednesday on the Teith perhaps. Mind you it was a great day, really relaxing, and nobody to look after. ;D

We got the boats off the water today, into the shed with them tomorrow, then the work begins getting eveything spic and spanish for you guys in the "Spring". There is to be a new upmarket fishing hut where the little house on the praire now stands and a serious upgrade of the road down from the main drag all by Jan15th I'm told. we shall see.

If nothing else, I have consistency on my side...................Bugger all on the Teith as wall. It was the Blue Banks beat I was on, I got the impression that it was very difficult not to catch a fish there in October, Well....................I managed to achieve the difficult bit. Virtually every cast expecting the reel to start clicking away but no deal. At least it managed to rain the whole day and not just part of it ! !
