Lunchtime report from the Tay System. Lord of the Isles Donnie W is currently being propelled round Loch Faskaly in his executive yacht by the Lady of the Isles He reports the River Garry well up and fuishies showing round the loch, but none have been courteous enough to accept the offerings he brings them. So hopefully some fresh water for Newtyle tomorrow. Those who haven't met Donnie and are going tomorrow will have the opportunity to meet Donnie himsel'. Regardeth CLaG

Ashamed to show my face now! I spent the whole day wearing dark glasses and a balaclava thinking my secret was safe. Speaking of safe things - the Faskally salmon certainly are. I know roughly where Newtyle is but can anyone tell me where to turn up in the morning please? (nicely set up for a p*ss-take, I suppose)

Spent a very enjoyable day on Newtyle yesterday, thanks again Jock. Managed to pick up one fish of about 7 or 8lb, sea liced, they nearly all seem to be this season, the fish are fairly motoring upstream. It took a Gold Willie Gunn dressed in a Cascade style on a Monteith full floater with 10ft sinking leader. Lovely fuish; well done. It has the blue back of a Tay summer fish - perhaps PAT's phrophecy will come true - fingers crossed

How was the fishing yesterday Jock? The football at Hampden was excellent You made the right choice Kenny - bet the atmosphere was fantastic. Clag is going to post a report later so don't want to steal all his thunder but suffice to say that we had a dozen or so rods out, most of them experienced salmon fishers, excellent conditions, reasonable water height and we had one coloured fish for our efforts. I saw 2 fish show all day. This from the Tay in the second week of October. A gravel beat like Newtyle should be carpeted with residents waiting to spawn. It is tragic but the truth is that the Tay is on it's knees. I really feel for guys like Jock and Colin who give 100% for their fishers but if there are no fish they can't do much about it. Part of the problem may be the unseasonably warm weather - water temperature in the low 50s is not going to tell the back end fish that it is time to run - it may well be that these fish appear in the next month but not much use for the local angling economy. I think the Tay is heading the way the Dee did in the early 90s. At the moment the realistic value of a days fishing on most beats upstream of Islamouth is about £25 - £50 - not the £100+ that is being asked. Maybe it is what is needed - anglers voting with their feet causing a serious rethink in river management policies. Unfortunately with many of the prime beats timeshared, these proprieters have their cash and have no incentive to do anything. I don't think I'll be alone in limiting my Tay fishing next year to the occasional carefully day for nostalgic purposes. CD

I noticed the 35 reported but would guess they weren't all caught yesterday. Unless of course that's why things were a bit quiet on Newtyle............

I noticed the 35 reported but would guess they weren't all caught yesterday. Unless of course that's why things were a bit quiet on Newtyle............ Murthly 2 averages 33.5 for October. For 2007 it has posted 35 in total for October to date , all of which came yesterday? I somehow doubt, at 9", Murthly 2 caught considerably more than Islamouth, Cargill, Ballathie, Stobhall and Taymount (it's the Queen of the Tay's week) combined. Same with Kercock - my guess is 15 is the weekly total entered by mushtake. However, if they did get 15, very well done - will someone please post an account of the day. Collie Wuff has already posted more than I was going to on the fuishin at Newtyle yesterday. Many thanks to Jocky M for the casting school with the newbies. They all enjoyed their day and were all puttin' out a line! All I'll add was it was good craic and a pleasure to meet Scotty Boy 9nro who is a genuine enthusiast, and yes he is exactly like in his posts - Scotty, we'll get yer that fish on the big rod and the flee yet! Right time for a serious reality check. The Tay is on its knees. (last year was a blip inthe medium to long term trend) ACTION NEEDS TO BE TAKEN NOW before it is too late. Frankly it should be nationalised. Loch Leven has been allowed to go to feck, please don't let a group of third generations destroy Scotland's premier salmon river as well. Afterall, Scotland spends more on the public sector than any country in the world except North Korea and Cuba. Anyway as we can rely on the third generations to do absolutely nothing that involves hand in pocket here are three things that can be done almost immediately: 1. Move to 100% catch and release for the next 5 years - I am gob smacked 2 out of 3 fish are being chapped 2. No beats let until 1st March (leave the kelts in peace for longer) and let's end this falacy that the Tay still has an "early spring run" 3. No more snakes None of the above require any changes in the Tay laws as they can be done, as with the Dee, by private agreement among the proprietors, and you can start tomorrow. The above are sticking plasters, but at least it is a sign of intent while a longer term plan is conceived. In the meantime, every pound sent to Jocky M and Victor Clem's habitat research is a pound well spent. Go on, send the project the price of a round of drinks. If every member of this forum did it they would be close to the final total they need. Yours watching with great sadness as the Tay falls over a cliff. CLaG

CLaG,
Thank you for this, above. We have just passed the £40,000 mark this weekend, and after today, will be unleashing Willie the Ghillie among you all for a final push before Xmas.

I would like to applaud CLaG's sentiments entirely. The Tay system is on its knees and i think its a disgrace that beat owners still allow the bulk of fish caught to be chapped.I fished Newtyle with the boys last year and i was a lucky rod catching some small coloured grilse but what struck me,compared to the Dee,is that there is so much good habitat on the river thats devoid of fish when the gravels should be hoaching with fish.It was obvious the fish were not there. The numbers of fish taken to the size of the river would indicate a real sparcity of fish being seen by fishermen during their day.I love fishing the Tay and am really saddened to see the plight of this majestic river continue.Having ghillied on a beat catching close to 700 fish on the fly last year i can see the benefits of a catch and release policy. The Dee board took some stick for the decisions they took ten years ago but the river is now coming back again to a level where sportsmen will pay their money and travel in hope.Who is going to champion the Tay's cause? The salmon would if they could i'd bet sadly the only people who are content would appear to be the riparian owners.I have contributed to Jock and Vics initiative and would encourage others to if they can.The more pressure we can put on by Lobbying publicly can only help in the long term.Hopefully we can embarass the riparian owners to sort out the mess they have created before they have no fish or fishers left. The resources of the Tay are Scotlands heritage and not to be squandered and treated with contempt imo.Sorrry rant over.
