As i have said in a previous post i always tip the ghillie as i see it as money well spent for the day i have just enjoyed and for when i return.
Tipping is also a personal choice for the angler some do, some don't, each too their own.
£20 at the end of the day as far as I'm concerned is not an issue.
A 20% tip in the states is the norm and should be expected / budgeted for.

Bag of worms - are you sure it isn't can of worms! ( Interesting comments though )
Been away from this site for a while but I see there are still many different opinions and no definitive answer - funny old thing!
IMSO You could quite easily generate a similar response 20 years down the line. I do however feel that those strongly against 'tipping' don't get many opportunities to fish private beats with resident Ghillies. I wonder why ?
I have a few single rod days free in September for any interested forum members - no tippers need not apply !.....................lol
Tight Lines to all

If I'm more like a can o worms then that was not my intention! For the record, I'm all for gillies getting professional rates of pay for doing a professional, physically demanding and sometimes impossible (nae fish and rods spirits to keep up/rods that cannot be pleased no matter what) job. Gillies go into the job knowing what they are getting into, but as some who have transferred from other professions testify, it can be quite a bitter pill to swallow financially, not just for them but for their families too I'll bet. Gillies (most but certainly not all I've met) are highly professional and dedicated to their beat/river/fishing in general. That surely deserves a better renumeration than some that have been indicated on this subject? Paying per fish caught I am dead against, since the gillie can do so much, but after that it is down to the rod and the gillie should not be penalised when the rod cannot fish or just has no luck (salmon fishing we are talking about here remember).
Yes, if rates of pay went up, then paying rods would have to pay a little more, as long as we all knew our gillies were receiving the benefit and it wasn't being absorbed into funding beat overheads instead - who would mind that? Otherwise, I do fear we could be talking about this with no improvement 20 years from now.

I have been fishing for more years than a lot of you big tippers, and I can honestly say I have never tipped, I just cant afford to go to the waters that you big tippers go to, given the Chance OPEN TO INVITES WILLIE GUNN etc) will tip very big)I have given advice, flies, experience, but never a tip considering that my wage bracket is on a par with gillies why should I. I had to save hard for my day season ticket spend hours tying flies to flog on e-bay etc to make my ticket price. I do not get tipped for doing a days work, and I dont give a shit if I dont get a call when the river is heavin with fish(RPSsalmon). I used to fish Cupar Grange(Season Ticket) and have seen Salmon fishing at its very best . But these places are now out of my reach and am now fishing places that are within my price bracket without gillies etc, I can now fish 6 days a week for about a 10th of my old permit outlay, on the Ericht+ Isla. And I am as happy as Larry I have had 6 fish so far this year banked, and a few losses and swirls at the fly so usually every outing theres fish about. It aint prime fishing but I aint payimg prime prices and most of us are not doing that, but I am quite happy to go out and fish less productive waters because that is what we love doing if I am out and about in pleasant surroundings and if I do not get a fish I couldnt care less. But if I do Its a bloody BONUS. And to top it all i am getting made redundant around about Xmas Yo Fu"*&en ) ho so watch this space (Dundee man goes suicidal).
2P worth Jake.

IMHO and experience, successfully suicidal Dundonians tie s##te flees and make for poor riverside company. Don't be one of those. A salmon fisher, above all others, should know that the unexpected/unbelievable is imminent it's just that we didn't expect it or believed it would ever happen untli it did. That's fishing (and life).

Here's the way to treat this pathetic topic. If you want to tip a gillie for whatever reason - just do it. If you don't want to tip for whatever reason - just don't tip. If your looking to attract more gillies onto this forum - end this little discussion. I know of 2 full time gillies who now wont go near this site because of this. Jock

Agreed - there's not much more to say on this. Good point WTG Perhaps WG or GRitchie could do the honours - it'll surely only take a picosecond

without wishing to drag this on any further I would like to add a comment ....when I asked my late , great, friend Paul Locke what one should tip a Ghillie his reply was : " nobody ever went bust by over-tipping " I had a guy fish with me on the Dee this year and didnt tip...in fact the Ghillie pointed out that he didn't tip the year before as well. The riperian owner rang me to say that he would not be welcome again.... Not tipping is pure bad manners in my opinion... no more no less.... Mick

Hi All
Since it was myself that started this thread, I have no problems if it is deleted
I was only trying to get a handle on what was to be expected or what was the norm, as this is my first season fishing on beats with Gillie's
I was not trying to start WW III, but the many replies have made for interesting reading
I think WTG sums it up perfectly, if you want to tip, tip, If you don't want to tip, don't tip
