I was out on the beat today and saw a lot of fish running and by and large they were big multi sea winter fish.I caught a couple of spanking 15 lbers dripping with lice:D and lost a couple more and had numerous pulls and plucks off the reel .I reckon somebody is gonna have a super bit of sport monday or tues on lower dee if the river keeps dropping. There's loads of availability just now and even complete novices have been catching good numbers of fresh biggish fish(you know the type that go haring off on breathtaking runs).I am not touting for business btw but merely passing on some information to like minded people who might be desperate to catch their first fish of the season;D ;D ;D

Now that's why this forum works so well.
Proper,generously given,up-to-the-minute,on-the-spot,advice.
Only wish the diary permited me to be able to take advantage of it.
BTW Greenbanks-do you think this is the spring run rolling up about 4 months too late??

ZH Dont think so ZH think there was a good spring which ran early this year, a few seals were seen up towards Banchory in early January which no doubt forced a lot of fish to run upstream at a rate of knots not normally seen at that time of year. I think this is the run of big MSW fish that usually come in June on the Dee with the grilse run.The msw fish are in excellent condition though which leads me to think that they are feeding extremely well at sea but the some of the grilse are thin and small sadly. Think someone is going to have a cracker of a days sport early next week conditions permitting.

Fished Altries yesterday and saw serious numbers of fish! This was the first time that we have fished the Dee and we will be back! Had 3 fish in the morning and one in the afternoon to two rods - 18lb, 12lb, 14lb and a grilse. 2 were liced, the other two were new fish. The 18lb fish was seal marked at the wrist 2 from Drum Run, 1 from Alfred's Pot and 1 from the Hotel Pool. Fantastic day out, beautiful fly water and a superb Ghillie. The best bit of the whole day was putting 'em back too! Murfey

I can't wait to get down there on Thursday Seems like Saturday was a good day - Maryculter had one too from the Hotel Pool. What set-up did you use - line, flies etc?

3 of the fish were on a cascade double size 12 fished with a fast sink tip. The 18lb fish took a size 10 executioner fished on a floater with a 5' intermediate polytip. Was fishing a 12' 7/8 weight when I hooked the fish - was a tremendous scrap and took 20-25 mins to land. After a bit of care, the fish swam off after giving me a bath!!
Surely days like the day we had yesterday on the Dee are a huge indication that putting fish back pays dividends?
Other point to mention about yesterday - when fishing really (size 14/16) wee later on in the evening for seatrout, it was a parr a cast for 10 minutes. Soon changed the fly to something bigger!!

Murfey,
wow, I would have thought that fishing 10's and 12's with the water as it was on Saturday would have been on the small side.
Just goes to show whay I know
Well done, a day you'll not forget on a hurry
